I'm going through the DVD burner scavenging process now. I have extracted the "good parts", so I'm down to the aluminum casing and assorted peices left in it. Sooo, I have two diodes, only one of which I want, a similar item that appears to be the receiver, which will be trashed, and an assortment of lenses.
Won't I need to keep and re-use some of these lenses / filters / glass ?
Both diodes are aimed at a small cube, which I believe is to get the beams moving in the same direction depending on which is in use. Call that one "A".
Then it would appear that both bounce off of a peice which is mounted at an angle with the receiver behind it. Assumably this sends the beam away from the receiver. Call that one "B"
Then there is a flat peice, just in the way. I guess it's a filter of some kind? Call it "C".
The next peice has a bluish tint to it and is located directly over they "eye" of the unit and is probably in place to send the beam down to the "eye" and to the DVD. Call it "D".
There is a flat peice directly under part "D", lets call it "E".
There is a small lens for the eye, underneath that peice, which is not part of the aluminum housing and is mounted so as to fluctuate under the influence attached electromagnets and neodymium magnets. This last peice would be "F".
Additionally there is one extra peice right in front of the receiver. Call that one "G".
Which, if any of these peices will I need to save, and why? Ie, what are there properties / effects on the beams.
Oh and sorry for the goofy picture, but it was the only way I could think present this understandably.

| If you're going for a DVD laser, you probably won't need anything for it besides the red diode. Any lenses in there won't collimate a diode's output, they will only focus it. One of the diodes is 780nm for reading CDs, and one at 650nm for reading DVDs.

| I personally try to salvage all the optics I can. They can be fun to use with lasers. I just keep a baby-food jar full of optic components from CD and DVD drives.
