After much reading I decided to make my first laser. (Noob Alert!)

I order a 150mW 405nm blu-ray diode with housing and focusing lens on ebay. It came with a driver kit for a simple adjustable driver.

I'm no EE but electronics are a hobby. I assembled the driver, tested my voltages and put it all together in a case.

The blu-ray diode worked great. I happily burnt tape and popped balloons for 3-4 weeks.

one evening I got it out to play with and shined the beam on the wall a few times. I set it on the table and picked it up a few minutes later and there was no beam. I pointed it at the table a few inches away and saw a very faint blu dot and then nothing.

I was hoping it was my driver so I bought a pre-assembled microdriver from ebay and attatched the diode, nadda.

Is that how they die?

Yeah that's what happens with a "dead" diode.
It's not completely off, but is very faint.

It probably got too much current, or the current was not stable enough.
