Yes, Santa was good to me. But seriously, folks...
1. Any recommendations for laser safety eyewear? My limited understanding is that I need something which will protect me from both red and IR, is that correct?
2. I've heard the balloon popping, tape cutting, match lighting stories. Does anyone know how hot the beam actually is from one of those red diodes?
Any other hints and tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

For eyeware, I can only say that the blue part of 3D glasses will protect from red, but not IR. I used an IR heat gun to try and see how hot the dot was from my DIY laser, but couldn't get a good reading. Just make sure you stay under the 3 volt and 200 milliamp limit to your diode!! Good luck!
Check out my homemade laser thread for a video of performence, even after limited power. _________________ -Homemade 175mw 650nm

For a red laser (IE the Sony diode type) you will need a blue tint of glasses. These generally keep out ecess red light
You don need IR glasses at all. And the reason for this is simple; the red diodes dont produce any IR at all. The greens do.
The reason for this is that the greens use IR pump diodes to produce infrared wavelengths. The light then goes through a crystal which doubles the frequency. In other words, it cuts the wavelength DOWN to 532 nm. But because some IR leaks through, you need an IR filter.....
Red lasers work by just lighting up a red diode, so no IR light was ceated in doing so.... |

| try taking one of those LED flashlights with multiple LEDs in it and replace the LEDs with dvd burner diodes, then put a collimator in front of it. |
