Do all high powered lasers, excluding DPSS, use rods? I mean like YAG, HeNe, Ruby, C02.

And by the way, what is a TEA laser?

No, HeNe is Helium Neon gas and is in a tube with mirriors on each end, one being only half reflective. The same goes with CO2, Carbon Dioxide gas.

A TEA laser is a UV laser which uses the nitrogen in the air as its lasing medium. It does not need a sealed tube or pressurised nitrogen gas to operate, just the still air that we breath. I can't remember what TEA stands for though.

And there are high power diode lasers (>5W).

Helium-Neon, CO2, argon ion, krypton ion, all gas lasers. All but the HeNe available in high power versions (multiple watts).

TEA stands for Transverse Excitated at Atmospheric pressure (If I remember correctly) and is when using plain air the most easy laser you can build from scratch materials. It lases on the nitrogen in the air. However, far better result are possible with low pressure pure nitrogen.

Thanks guys, much needed info on my part.

And wouldn't nitrogen gas in the air be dangerous...? Nitrogen suffocates you without you even realising until it's too late. Is a TEA laser some how enclosed...?

the majority of the air we breath is Nitrogen so no it's not a problem for a TEA laser because they don't use any extra Nitrogen except the amount that is going into your lungs.

A Nitrogen laser that needs and external source of N2 can produce some problems if you let it vent into the area that you are standing in. But if you have an open window and a fan to exaust the excess N2 you will be fine. N2 is also heavier than air and will fall to the floor. So unless you are about 2 feet high you will still be breathing fine.
