I just finished up my 225mW red laser with adjustable focus, the clear acrylic was flimsy so I added the holy insert.

It looks cool when its turned on.

Now -- let's hear some bragging. How far away can you bust a balloon?
How long to cut electrical tape?

Well if you insist.... Wink Nah, I dont know yet. It cuts tape about as good as a 80-90mW greenie. Pretty cool. As for balloon popping, I dont have a test range. I am sure I can focus the beam at a very long distance for popping though.

You seem to be quite expert on focussing and collimating. Maybe I can get some help from you,
tweaking the collimation of my spyders. As for the "test range", come on down any time, we'll
stage a laser shoot-out at my office.

It's the tallest building in mountain view, and we're on the top floor, so if you come at night
we can aim all our lasers out the windows and freak out the whole town! ;-)

Damn that sounds like fun! Mr. Green Yeah the spyders collimation should be an easy fix. I have a plethora of lenses that we can try. We can even construct a similar detachable focusing collar.

Allright, I got a couple figures and some data on the RED Aries/reatsam 225. It cuts electrical tape in a 2sec. pass and pops a balloon in about 1.5 sec @ 10ft. distance. More experiments to come.....

Another bizzare thing I have noticed is the way the beam feels on your skin. Typically, the greenies have a sharp stinging pain, the red laser I have has this very dull penetrating and throbbing pain when you come in contact with it. Does anyone know why that is?

Perhaps this is better in another thread - but as Spyders and collimation has been raised - why is it so many of the cheap pens have good collimation and some (many?) of the more powerful lasers have relatively poor collimation - even though there is greater room for optics and spacing of the bits?

I would expect a more powerful laser to have the best collimation possible - to get more power out in the beam and final spot and to waste less in spread.

One would think that anyway. The difference is that some units offered by WL are mass produced and the quality controll process throughout manufacturung has been perfected. As for the spyders, they have a completely different manufacturing facility that is realatively brand new. Its sucks, but they will get better I am sure

Lower temperature / larger area?
Red tissue absorbs green light better?

All the power off the green is emmediatly absorbed by your first layer off skin , hence it stings immediatly . The red however cann pass through your skin more easely ( because of you skin itself being reddish ) So a big amount off energy will still be absorbd but it will be able to penatrate your tissue deeper hence the dull penetrating and throbbing pain. You can see this effect very clearly , if u point a green at the bottom off your hand none off the light will come through , but if u point u'r red at your hand the whole off u'r hand will look red.

This is my opinion , could be wrong though
