I sure hope not! I ordered mine today! O.K. fellow teckno-freaks, listen up. The only other greenie Iv'e ever owned I bought from "Z-Bolt about 2 years ago....5mw....sent it back shortly after recieving it for a mod, Came back with sticky note that read 16.6mw...didn't seem much brighter to me so it came apart....drilled a whole in casing to access potentiometer and fiddled with untill best results were achieved...pretty bright little laser....life was very short, 200 hour at best. So is this $399 Nexus 95mw going to impress me? Could a 5mw be cranked up high enough in any way buy "Fiddling" with the pot to compare to the Nexus! Please tell me I've spent my money wisely!!

I just recieved my Nexus an hour ago and compared it side by side to a <5mW green pointer. There's a stunning difference in beam strength. To be completely fair, you have to use two different output lasers side by side to determine the difference.
The Nexus is VERY, Very strong in terms of dot-brightness. On the wall, it's white spot area appears the size of a quarter and is impossibly bright to look at (hence, I bought two pairs of the safety glasses for working with this laser). I looked at the spot on a distant wall without the glasses and I'm still regretting it (note that specular reflections may be harmful). The <5mW pointer, by comparison, is still eyecatching but the bright-spot appears the size of a grain of rice or perhaps a small pea on the wall next to the larger Nexus dot. Wall was about ten feet away. Up closer, the dots appear smaller as there's little beam divergence.
Pointing my Nexus at a sheet of thick GSM photocopy paper (and aiming at a large area covered with black ink) triggered very fine tendrils of faint smoke along with a burning smell. I don't think you'll be dissappointed with the strength. Even the beam itself was visible in the semi-lit room but not the beam issued from the <5mW.
Be sensible when you get yours.

| I may not have answered your last question: Apparently these lasers from Wicked are supposed to be OEM ('as produced in the factory') and therefore last much longer since they are NOT cranked up beyond their design specs....as long as they are not abused or fired for excessive extended amounts of time (eg using them non-stop for periods of time that generate excessive heat). As such, they are not "tweaked" in order to achieve the higher output. It may be possible to do so but these are not designed like the Leadlight variety with an easily accessed interior via the switch aperture. I'm extremely pleased with the output of this laser and I was specifically after a higher output of portable laser to begin with. As OEM DPSS lasers go, you should get about 3,000 hours or even 4,000 based on duration of use and general treatment. |
