I live in Australia and i have heard that you can import, export and own lasers of any strength whether it being 1mw or 100mw. I have also heard that you can be fined if the laser is over 5mw or even 1mw so im still not to sure ?? If i buy one will it be seized, sent back to the country it came from or will i cop a nice fine!

and i was reading in the other post that if the laser is considered a module it will get past customs and if it is a pointer it wont?? (at least thats what i understood) This brings me to ask another question, do you have to have a liscence do you have to state a reason of purchase??? can anyone help me out here i know its a big ask.

thnx, ed

I contacted Australian Customs directly about ordering Green Laser devices in Pointer shaped versions (like these here on Wicked) just last year. I was then contacted by Customs and it was explained that there are no restrictions for importing for individual use. They said I could import any laser without exception and that it was up to me to act responsibly. It is however unlawful (Consumer Affairs Regulation of Laser Pointers 1996) to 'SELL a laser pointer over <1mW in Australia' to the public.

So it's okay to buy and/or import from overseas for your own use but you can't sell any laser device in Australia that would be classified as a 'laser pointer" (any battery operated laser that is portable) which exceeds <1mW

In theory, buying online from say Wicked Lasers is fine as long as you don't try to sell your laser to the Public here in Australia. If your package does not clearly identify the contents (eg "Novelty Item"), Customs may open it. The Customs Fee for opening a laser pointer enroute is AUD$75 (I discovered this earlier this year re a green <5mW pointer which was labelled by ThinkGeek.com as a "Novelty Item")

In theory, there's no reason for Customs to seize your order at all. However, if you live in America... well, that's different. And I'm not sure what the rules are over there. Presumably naming the object as a Module or Device will suffice.

Forgot to mention:
You don't need a licence to operate lasers in Australia.
Like any device such as a car or a pocket knife, you can only be fined etc for misusing them such as pointing them at aircraft or at people in public or using them to menace the general populous with. If you are putting on a laser show with a powerful display, local council permission may be required and that might involve public insurance... but that's for huge proffessional lighting setups with computers and graphics etc. These professional and semi pro laser displays are usually safety-key fitted. So when it comes to portable lasers like those sold here, you'll be fine as long as you're not causing public mischief and being naughty.
