Hoping this will help other folks learn to a) buy lasers only from reputable dealers with warranties and return policies, and b) if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
It's too long I think to put into a post so I made a webpage instead:
http://www.felesmagus.com/pages/lasers-cheap.html
Hope this helps some folks.

| Well done, someone needed to do something to stop people like us going straight to ebay and buying a laser which we are dissapointed with in the future. |

wish I read this 24 hours ago
I asked the guy to refund my paypal and not to bother sending the item
and he will avoid a NEG which I see he just got 1 today right after I bid.
So much for his guarentee its most likely NG unless he can prove this has a IR filter and really does put out 50mw |

EXCELLENT job there!! It certainally deserves "sticky" placement and I hope more will take time to read it.
The before and after shots of the filter drives the point home. One thing about your readings when using the filter is that you and I both know it was not designed for this application of blocking such high powered IR and some will obviously leak thru. In addition, the green is affecting your IR readings and the only way to true up the readings is separation with a prism and measureing the individual beams. Easier said than done for certain and just something to keep in mind though the 808nm would be near impossible to measure with this method.
Great work there!! _________________ http://gadgeteer.home.pipeline.com/laser/laser.htm

Thanks for the kind words.
Gadgeteer, I've added some comments about the readings not being fully accurate for that reason. It's definately beyond my capabilities to try and separate and measure the different lines.

Wow, that was very thorough, interesting stuff. I can't believe a company would sell something that emits dangerous IR like that, especially in "pointer" form. This should not only be stickied, but should submitted as one of those scam-warning guides on eBay for those that might be looking for cheap lasers. Might save someones vision. Again, nice job. _________________

yes, I just went through his feedbacks and old auctions I dont see a difference in the stcok photo he is using for 5mw and the 50mw
look as though he has sold leadlights too but you have to go back a few months 1400+ sales on ebay is not worth ruining for some lasers |

I've just made an update, to illustrate what 532nm safety goggles look like to IR lasers. It's actually kind of sobering to think that I was relying on these goggles, and indeed had some reflections from that cheap green laser flash me while I was looking real close at what I was doing.
Not knocking WL of course, the goggles do exactly what they're supposed to, it's the damn cheapo laser that's to blame. If I were worried that I might have suffered some eye damage, what sort of doctor would I want to go to, to find out? Just any old eye doctor, like the kind who do glasses?
Anyhow, here's the pic:
The glasses on top are Wicked's 635nm sport elites, and the glasses on the lower right are Wicked's 532nm sport elites. The glasses on the lower left are rated OD4 at 694nm and OD6 at 1064nm, I don't know what their exact rating is at 808nm but tests show they absorb over 90% of the energy from my 808nm laser.

The pointer and case shown in the link are virtually identical to what I got through the $35 leadlight purchase. |
