I thought this would help to show the intensity of the colors, and each wavelength of colors. Maybe sticky it ?
and for any one else thats wants to add in the rest of the colors,

The electromagnetic spectrum does, but the color spectrum (see title of post) doesn't. |

I understand that human vision is most sensitive around 555nm and then the sensitivity tapers off in both directions from there, and have read that the visible spectrum is typically from about 400 to 700 nm.
With my near IR laser (808nm) I can see a very faint red glow. Sort of like as if a 670nm laser had dead batteries and was just struggling to work.
Would that be actual 808nm light that I'm seeing, albeit very faintly? My first assumption was that it was some 'red' light being generated as a side-effect of the laser. But now that I've thought that through, it doesn't make any sense; lasers are supposed to be monochromatic, so if it's running at around 808nm there wouldn't (or shouldn't) be any light at 670nm or any other frequency, right?

I think the human eye can see ever so slightly into the wavelengths beyond visible light, such as just barely into IR and just barely into UV, but by hardly anything. _________________

Steph, it's from what we call the LED effect and though the 808 is fairly narrow band there is a considerable broadband emmision into the red and IR of the slopes. Emmision from diodes, any laser really without etalons, looks similar to the peak spectral eye response chart you are familiar with. Basically looks like a gaussian profile (bell shaped curve for others intrest) and the red that you see is nothing more than out of band emmision. Kind of like a cheap linear splattering on other freqs in a way. That's actually a bad analogy but if it works.... See if you can find a chart of the emmision spectrum from the diode. Yathern is confused Is violet the most effecient, i herd blue was, like a 500 mW red= a 50 mW blue- so is violet beter than blue basicly? im confused |

I think Cosmic rays are the highest frequency, but I might be mistaken.
yathern, it depends on what you mean by efficient. There's electrical efficiency then there's perceived brightness, to name but a few.
In terms of perceived brightness, the illustrations at the top of this thread show what colour is perceived the brightest. A 5mW laser at 550nm will look several times brighter than a 5mW laser at either 450nm or 650nm.
In terms of electrical efficiency, that depends a lot on the laser's construction.
And in terms of burning efficiency, it depends on how well the beam is collimated or focused, what the material is to be worked on, and for most lasers, what the colour of the material is vs. the colour of a laser.
It's just not as simple as saying a xx mW of one colour equals xx mW of another colour - not unless you put it in context.

cosmic rays... thats what i was thinking of.
a green 5mW takes more energy than a red 5mW, because a green uses a 200mW or higher diode that produces a IR beam, that then goes through a crystal, where lots of the energy is lost, but you get a green beam instead of a IR beam. but if you had a 100mW green dot and a 100mW red dot, as long as they are colminated the same, they will both have the same amount of burning power, on a black object of course |

if anybody still looks at these the spectrum put up by jedi linux goes 500 to 800 back to 700 then to 900????? |
