hi,

You may not realize this, but the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) is recently attacking chemical suppliers because they sell chemicals that could supposedly make explosives. The one i read it about was United Nuclear, but a search on the SPSC site revealed that they have already shut down an number of chemical supply sites. United nuclear is in the midst of fighting whatever court procedure the CPSC is using to try to stop them. they want to restrict all sorts of stuff. i was going to list some here, but the list is too long. you can see what they are restricting here http://www.unitednuclear.com/legalaction.htm so basically and model rocked hobbyists and kids who want to do science experiments, and im sure many highschools too will not have access to the materials they need. In order for someone to buy the restricted chemicals, it would require a permit that costs $1000 or so. as you know, most people don't have that kind of money to spare. and probably many highschools dont either. (not because they're poor, but because all the $$ is going to stuff like new gyms and stuff, probably private highschools will suffer the most if any) maybe places of education are exempt. you can donate money to united nuclear on the page i presented earlier if you wish to, but since i dont have money. im going to send e-mails to the important people at the CPSC. thier addresses are here at http://www.cpsc.gov/about/contact.html

What they really should ban is fertilizer and diesel fuel. all you do is soak the fertilizer (urea fertilizer) in diesil and you get a pretty powerful exlosive. (yes im being sarcastic about banning them, sorta) Thats what was used in the oklahoma city bombing. not the chemicals they want banned. Sulfer? Permanganate compounds? aluminum powder? yes these can all be used as ingredients for explosives or in the case of the last 2, rocket fuel, although i don't know how. Sulfer is used in gunpowder, along with charcoal and potassium nitrate. and is smells bad when burned. Sulfer is the Brimstone in the saying "Fire and Brimstone". So anyway, the stuff being banned its pretty useful for chemistry demonstrations. ive seen some that are so cool. The CPSC claims they're trying to stop people from making illegal fireworks. i dont think stuff like this should be regulated. instead i think people should be smart enough to not kill anyone with chemicals (or lasers) but sadly a few careless or stupid people ruin it for us all.

im spending too much time on this...i gotta go study for Organic Chemistry. (learing about some of the things they are banning you know. aromatic compunds, and therefore benzoate compounds, nitrate compounds, and most of what is being totally banned.) im gonna make thermite this summer when i have time. luckily i wont have to buy aluminum from anywhere. ill grind my own from scraps somehow.

anyone else not like this particular happining? well lets hope the CPSC dosent succeed.

~Andy~

Ps. Sorry if the formatting is annoying. i didnt capitalize alot of stuff that i should have.

I'm not in the states but when groups like that try restrict things like that they can just go stick it up their a**.

America seems to have powerfull lobby groups as of late who crack down on general public fun. Yay.

Yea, that does piss me off, UnitedNuclear is a great site to, they would pretty much have to close of this gets though and I won't be able to buy stuff like magnesium ribbon anymore : (

Oh and Thermite's Aluminum needs to be like 400 mesh, thats really fine, I dont know how you can get that consistancy and quality with home tools :/

machine shop?

This is yet another thing that doesn't look too good.... here's a quote from someone: "man will fight with weapons, and if those dissapear (banned) he will bludgon others with his fists" hmm... if only we could go back to the days of what my dad tells me, when he could walk around in the streets with a gun in plain sight and buy ammo at age 12 with only a "just be careful with that son"

I have a doubt that the ban will do anything for malicious users, there's a thing called BLACK MARKET

I doubt this will get very far at all, they might try to restrict some things but to restrict chemicals required in schools and such, no sane judge would permit this kind of ban, then again a jury of 12 thought OJ was innocent, but honestly I think this won't get far at all.

Every time I see crap like this I think of that movie Demolition Man "Do you have the salt?" "Salt is not good for you, hence, it is illegal."

This is insane. Just like gun regulations, anyone who wants to do wrong will do wrong. You only take away the ability for the law abiding man to defend himself. Machine guns are illegal, criminals still use them. So who doesn't have them then? The cops have them, the military has them, the criminals have them. Only the law abiding folks, the people who actually respect the law don't.

With or without chemicals, terrorists will still be terrorists. Little Johnny down the street will not be able to make motors for his model rockets anymore. But the terrorists will still be blowing crap up if that's what they want to do. Maybe we should outlaw cars, or fuel, or fertilizer, or airplanes, or, well, anything else that they use. Hell, lets outlaw air! What if they make poison gas from fried chicken! Air is the delivery vehicle right? Well, lets ban it then! I mean, if we want to stop terrorism, lets take it all away. Lock everyone in a bunker. No rights for anyone.

Terrorists attack who we are, how we live, our freedoms, our finance, our lives. What in the hell does some silly chemicals have to do with that? If chemicals had been restricted, would that have stopped 9/11? Maybe it would have stopped OKC? No? Well, maybe the next terrorist attack could involve home made smoke bombs. Oh crap! Better ban Coke cans! Or maybe they might hijack a plane with home made sparklers! "Don't move or I will write your name!".

hah, i see you had some time on your hands Wink I agree, another quote "there's over 2000 ways (god) could kill you right now that you aren't thinking about" hmm... what if lightning struck my house from this non stormy sky, it traveled down the powerlines into my compy to the keyboard and though my body! BAN compys!

well, I'll just hope that this doesn't go though.

PS: how the heck do you make thermite anyways?

hey,
i just looked and united nuclear already discontinued the really fine aluminum powder, i think its called german aluminum. uh, i think its just because they cant get it from anywhere, hard to tell. but they sell 400 mesh atomize aluminum still. i dont think that had anything to do with thier gov't situation now. on the topic of thermite, its essentially aluminum powder, (400 ish mesh is what someone on here said a few posts back) and iron oxide, also finely powdered. i guess any kind though. because i think there's iron (II) oxide and iron (III) oxide if i remeber from high school and gen chem from college. i dont think the type matters does it? ive seen recipies where they just tell you to attach an iron nail to a battery. (i forget if its supposed to be the anode or cathode) so basically a finely mixed powder of them will burn pretty good. i guess its good that you need to get it really hot to start the rxn though. use a piece of burning magnesium to start it. it burns through all sorts of stuff. there are some cool videos od google videos i like this one. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7231843493488769585&q=thermit e i heard you can start it with a sparkler too. its fun to burn through aluminum cans with sparklers. mmm thats the basics. the cool thing it is produces molten iron from the burning. this guy theodore gray has a column in popular science where he told you how to do this, and he says you can get the iron oxide by dragging a magnet through the sand at the beach. its apparently the black sand. its called gray matter i think. he does some cool stuff.

so anyway im still hoping the law thing or whatever it is dosent go through either. but i guess ill just have to wait now or something.

bye bye for now
