I have a PS2 opened up here, ready to get this laser blazing. Twisted Evil Any of you guys know what wavelength it is? Would it be in the near IR? Or around 650nm?

Check this out....

http://www.photonics.com/spectra/tech/XQ/ASP/techid.1163/QX/read.htm

Says the diode emits both 650 AND 780nm

650 is for DVD's and 780 is for CD's.... So I have no idea how you'll get that to work, but it may just pulse between the two trying to find the correct use (searching for disk basically) and since there isn't a disk, it may just keep pulsing or something.... I have no idea what it will do, but I found the wavelength for you.

It's either 780nm(near IR) or 650nm(possible if it plays dvd's) I don't have a PS2, but I don't think it can record to dvd/cd correct? If it just reads then the laser diode will be 2-7mW(guestimate). If it can record to CD then it would be IR 780nm at around 30mW or so, and if it can burn DVD's it would be anywhere from 650nm 40mW-70mW or higher.

Alrighty, thanks Dominico and Athoul. Tearing it apart right now. *Very tedious

EDIT: Looks like this is going to be a big job, either I power up the entire unit, or somehow get the board schematics to find the power contacts.

be CAREFUL, don't want to do what I did (tearing apart a CDrom drive) and apply reverse voltage! I'd suggest powering it up (opened) and using a voltimeter, verycarefully test the voltage of the leads on the diode.
