A dvd and the new nlu ray and hd-dvd are not cds that are multi-layered. yes cds don't have multi layer and only dvds do, I don't know why though. Anyways they store more data cause the beam is smaller. Also hd-dvd now holds 40 or 45gb of data and is cheaper to make than blu-ray and it is also faster to read and write. So blu-ray isn't so great.

Blu-Ray is at 405nm. It is a VERY deep blue almost a blue/violet because it's closer to the UV end of the spectrum. It's wavelength is a lot tighter than a CD or DVD players. You will not be able to pull apart your new device which will be made by Sony (as they have not licensed the technology to anyone yet) and make a "working" laser pointer from it. The beam will probably not be very powerful.

JVC on the other hand is working on a new optical media that is in the ultra violet region of the visual spectrum...Their disc will be able to hold more than Sony's new blueray.

Sony ALWAYS does this to themselves. If they would licence their technology they would make more money...The should have learned this with the Mini-Disc and other things they've made.
