| A laser without an IR filter will produce IR radiation which can bounce off surfaces and go into your eye without your knowledge of it happening. Essentially it would be like shining the laser into your eye without you knowing about it. There are things you can buy online that measure a lasers power but if the laser you bought is a cheap laser without an IR filter it probably means that it isnt actually shining 50mw of green light. |

| im not saying it will, im saying you wont be able to tell if its hitting your eye or not. the invisible light it gives out can bounce just like the visible light. If that happens long enough then you will probably suffer some eye damage. |

from what I understand, IR that comes out is unfocused and is in a "cone"shape so it defuses a lot after like 1 foot or so - maybe this is not as bad
but someone correct me if I am wrong (on that one and this one) but cant you just get a IR filter and cut it into a small thingie that you can put in your lens cap assuming you have a lens cap? |

| on my cheap 50mw laser, the IR stays collimated with the laser beam pretty well, so i take the risk. I only bought it since im waiting for my laser. When I do get my laser, i probably won't be using my cheap one as much. |
