| I mean you really threatened someone with a laser? In all honesty that just doesn't seem to be something to be afraid of. |

| I guess if you actually would use a laser in "self defense" it would be considered unreasonable (especially if you do permanent damage) and it would be you facing court then. Not talking about the gazillion-dollar damage sue. |

Laser is bit more powerful to be a self defense weapon, and it will not be very suitable to carry laser weapons, it is strictly prohibited according to the law. it will be wise to take a knife or stick or something like that for self defense .. _________________ knuckles |

What you say is true, but lets try not to resurrect threads made back in the dusty old year of '07. |

Maybe its time to resurrect this question due to the news of the mighty Arctic 1watt Wicked Lasers beast.
This could defiantly be a self defense weapon. If it burns skin as bad as they say it will, all you'd have to do is touch some skin and i think anyone would back up. plus the spillover light of having it pointed say at your hands or something would probably blind someone for a long time if not permanent .
Woe that's a lot of responsibility. But if it saves your life???? |

Yeeaahhh....ok. Good job. Your alive, but both of you are permanently blind now. That makes us laser enthusiasts look both intelligent and sophisticated too...
Once that hits the media, we're all screwed. Don't do it. Period. It's foolish and unreliable when it counts.
Where I live, it is fully permissible by law for me to carry a telescopic steel baton(the same kind police use) on my person for self-defense. It gets quite a reaction when I whip it out, and I don't have to worry as much about collateral damage from imprecise movements, which often occur in self-defense situations. Not to mention, pretty much any damage I cause that way, will fully heal in time.
Cheers,

No doubt im going to be berated left right and centre, but thats ok, i can deal with that.
If someone was to break into my house and threaten myself or my partner or my property with violence/damage then i would have NO compunctions about unleashing 1w of laser light into his eyes. NONE whatsoever.
You commit a crime of that magnitude and you either deal with the possible outcome of your criminality or you stay out of trouble like law abiding people do.
Guns are used for this purpose specifically. My laser isnt but than again a rolling pin wasnt desgined to clobber some one over the head with. |

Good point Hamster, I respect your opinion. but why would I be blinded if I shined it at an attacker or on the ground in front of him as a warning, some distance away. My understanding is looking at the dot shining on non-reflective surfaces like dirt or asphalt is not going to harm your eyes. Am I misinformed? Obviously if it hit glass or something shiny I would be at risk as well. So in home guns are best, but facing a gang in the streets with a little club they are just going to take it away from you and show you what feels like. I would want to scare the crap out of them long before they get that close, and hopefully avoid blinding or shooting them. |

I think it is kind of strange to use the laser as self defense weapon, because there are other better options, easier to use and handle (and conceal), maybe even easier to scare people with (I'm thinking there are villains which are dumb enough to have no idea what the heck a laser is, and be much more frightened by a pepper spray, not to mention a gun...). And the risk of going to jail because you defended yourself, just because the laser usage is not regulated, doesn't worth it. And what if the thief has a laser himself? It will be quite a battle... _________________ Photonic B2B Market |

Thank you, photonic. If you're worried about self-defense, don't buy a laser. Invest in Krav Maga lessons instead. As cool as lasers are, they aren't THAT awesome. In short, make sure you select the right tool for the job. _________________

Yes, better learn Aikido. Wear your black belt and use the laser just to point towards the door to show the villain the exit path . _________________ Photonic B2B Market |

All this talk about "weapons" is a bit non-sequitor.
I'm a combat vet. If anyone decides to put my life in danger, they become "owned." It doesn't matter if it's a gun, laser, pepper, stun gun or Bic Pen. You are going down! Would I go out looking for trouble? Of course not. The biggest critic of fighting is the combat vet.
I've been faced with the decision "Stop Them" or "Hurt Them." The threat determines the outcome. I have carried a gas ring, a 900K V cell phone, expandable baton and the "cat" keychain fob.
If I have a laser on me and someone gets stupid, so be it. It's their call. There's no waiting to "talk it out." This sort of action wouldn't occur haphazardly on my part. A true threat would have to develop. And, being a cardiac patient, I won't give them a second chance. The same thing would happen if I were changing a tire and was holding a tire iron.
While the above might sound harsh to some of you, you've never been in hand-to-hand combat with someone intent of killing you. I have. You do what's necessary at the moment to survive. |
