Hello, I am an avid herbal smoker. I do not smoke illegal herbs such as marijuana, but herbs like Scutellaria and Pedicularis. These are legal herbs that have been used for relaxing, mainly in the pacific culture. As a true connoisseur of herbal smoking I am always trying to find the purest ways to smoke. As I stumbled across wicked lasers, and eventually this forum, I found my self wondering if I can use a laser to burn my herbs, thus not adding unwanted chemicals to my smoke such as butane from a lighter? Since my herbs are generally green, I am assuming that a red laser is the color spectrum i want to go... Right? Any idea how powerful of a laser i will need to burn my herbs? Thanks for the help.

This will probably not work out well. My GXII will start a smoldering fire only if you hold it very still, which requires you to be close, but will you really wear goggles to do it? If not, it is like a welders arc. Even then, the amount of heat is, well, milliwatts, and the smoke may deposit on and damage the diode. Only a small amount will be lit. An ordinary powerful flashlight with momentary switch, plus a focusing lens, (magnifying glass) will put some serious wattage on the spot, and you can use ordinary sunglasses.

You should check out the Torch flashlight, I light my cigarettes with this thing all the time.

The torch would definately work much better. However you are correct in that a red laser would be best (other then a CO2 laser of course).
Using a laser for this is not very practical, though it can be done. You can use a fousing lens to gain more energy/area and better results. The main issue though is eye safety. _________________ Cheers,

I find that burning "herbs" is best done at first with a lighter. Then, once the green matter has turned to black with red embers, its easy to keep stoked with the laser beam. Im using a 75mW executive with the cap set....and lasershades of course. _________________
