I orderd a couple of types of the 405 nm cheapies on ebay (star type and pointer only type)and they are very dissapointing. No beam is barely visable at night.Goes about as far as a red pointer.(500 feet)And to look blue they need to reflect on a certain type of white surface or they look like a black light.I got 3 and they are all the same,so dont waste your money bidding on these.

405nm is not "Blue" it is... in fact ..."ultraviolet" like a black light Wink

Do you think the UV laser diode in these may just be turned down to a very low level?

Very possible
Mine is 150mw...beam is barely visible in a darkened room with a little smoke added. During the day it's vurtually invisible. However....mine has a focusable lens, and set just right it will light "White"..yes white matchs from 20 feet away! and if your skin or "Target" is white it will burn right through white paper/linen ect.

How come the violets can burn white stuff, while greenies and reds cant?

Because in the same way that red will absorb green light, and green will absorb red. Yellow can absorb purple light. And, Also, in the 405nm range, there is alot of UV in the beam, and our eyes cant tell what does or does not reflect UV light.
