I am new here so please bare with me if my questions are basic or obvious. I have spent a good amount of time trying to find information on the legality of >5mw lasers in California, but I have had very very little success. Most of the stuff I find merely talks about the classification of the lasers and not what I can and cannot do with them. It perplexes me as it seems that the US does not WANT to inform the public of what will or will not get them into trouble or hurt their citizens... very strange. Any links to clear cut facts of what can and cannot be done is very much appreciated.
That being said, here is the issue... I would ideally like to use a ~200mw green, or possibly RGY not exceeding 250mw or so combined, laser for a one time party in a local bar in California. The bar will be charging at the door to enter unless one buys a presale ticket before (I do not know if this is considered public display anymore?). I plan to put a black plate or a mirror under the laser so that it cannot shoot down into the crowd, thus physically restricting the vertical beam angle. I plan to have the beam no closer than 4 feet above say a 6 foot person. The question is... is this illegal? If so, will I actually have a reasonable risk of being punished? How big of an offense is this? Is there a permit I can get from the local PD to make this legal if it is indeed illegal?
I appreciate any and all of your responses! Thanks!

Hi there,
In the past I have been asked similar questions, also we had at one point someone who was in the laser entertainment field specifically posting on here. I will try to dig up some inforrmation for you. However a couple thingd to keep in mind, audience scanning (where the lasers scan the crowd) can not exceed 5mW entering anyones eyes. This is why powerful lasers will often use difraction gratings to spread out the beam so that less mW/area will hit any one person. another thing is that when focused so that a lot of energy is being focused on any one spot (ie all of your 250mW) there is a height limit where the beam will not be able to hit anyone in the head. Once you take these things into consideration and make it safe, only then will you not get into trouble. If you are charging for enterance, you might also need to apply for a variance to allow for the laser display. A variance is required for any public use of lasers greater then 5mW. _________________ Cheers,
Sean. |
