Looking for the best distance laser to help align dishes etc...but also would like to have some fun burning etc.... I have a 5mw green now and it's fine for Astro work...but looking for something with more power.
Any ideas? |

good for distance -> small divergence
high power -> wicked lasers, techlasers
The executive series from wickedlasers are available up to 125 mW and have a very small divergence. My advice: go with the Fusion (executive series 125mW) _________________ green 3~8mw ebay laser
green 50mw ebay laser (mounted on telescope)
homemade DVD-Burner Laser (~120mW, divergence: 0.05 !)
RGY laserscanner (130mW red 60mW green)
300mW green Laser module from ebay
money spent on lasers: ~1800 $ (some are broken...)

| How would that compare to a Infiniti II 150mW.... Anyone have experience with both? |

the divergence is almost the same (if the divergence of the infiniti II is right).
My infiniti has a divergence of ~2 mRads, much more than advertised. _________________ green 3~8mw ebay laser

Thanks for that info.... I guess my _main_ goal is high visibility over the longest distance possible. If I have someone at a distant tower, I want them to be able to see the dot when I light it up.
I guess I could go higher but I'd like to stay around or under 500.00
Now for 500 bucks, I wouldn't mind being able to pop and burn also....but that's not the main goal.
Thanks in advance for any added comments and help. |

Actually the human eye cant detect this because the distance at which the beam will have a noticable difference, the eye cannot see that far. If you have two lasers that have a 0.2 mRad in difference and point them to the sky, you cannot see any difference what so ever. Who would ever want to appreciate a laser beam 10 miles away from its source anyway, just to prove the point?
These lasers are fundementally made for entertainment, if someone is worried about 0.2mRad then why ever bother with a pointer to begin with. It is just to critical for anyone to worry about 0.2 mRad from a pen laser that is not made for anything scientific where exact measurements are critical. _________________ Spyder II GX, BX

| The "shooter" may not be able to notice the mRad, but the person on the other side (tower) will. So I agree with Athoul on this one. What about beam visibility though? How well do you want to be able to see it? And what would you like to burn (I know that is not the "main idea" but it is still important). |

Negative, you will not be able to see the same thing the "shooter" see's. The arradiance intercepted by the pupil of the eye at that distance is going to be determined by Gaussian distribution and the degree at which you are viewing the beam which at that distance the photon pressure is to weak to see or determine because of visibility threshold of viewing monochromatic wavelengths at certain degree's of angles. You only see the dot, the shooters perspective is relative to the position of the beam.
I guarantee, you nor anyone else can see a beam of any laser pointer looking at it from the side (field of view) 2 miles down range let alone 10 miles of the aperture and be able to tell 0.2 mRad, its beyond physics. If the human eye could detect 0.2 mRad, at any distance at any angle, there would be no need to have beam profilers. However it's ok to agree with an opinion whether its wrong or right. To me, people are using to much science and physics for an enthusiast class of laser pointers. The wow factor is just as good rather its 1.0 or 1.5 mRad and 0.2mRad is NOTHING to even worry about when it comes to these laser pointers and if someone should care about that difference with a hand held laser that will be used for nothing more than a novelty, then they are just making it more difficult than this hobby has to be.

Colorado al....I'm understanding that your primary purpose is to project the smallest visible "DOT" over along distance, that could be easily seen from someones elses viewpoint(not yours)....AT THE IMPACT POINT OF THE DOT.........................go with what Athoul said _________________ Best Regards Chargerman
