Hi LC, my name is David Scott and I'm here to update you on the future of Laser Community. I'm very excited to head this project!

Laser Community is not just going to be a forum, we plan to turn Laser Community into a large web 2.0 platform filled with features similar to large social networks. Don’t know what web 2.0 is all about? Click here

The new LC will be managed independent of Wicked Lasers. That is, Wicked Lasers will have the same status as other laser companies on Laser Community. We’re here to serve our members and everyone is equal.

It’s quite difficult to explain exactly how the new LC will work but just to give you an idea, imagaine myspace meets facebook meets youtube meets flickr meets Digg meets wikipedia meets ebay and you combine all that into a single open laser forum. Yeah, lots of work ahead of us!

I’m going to keep this post short and sweet. If you have any specific questions post them in this thread. You can also PM me or email me at askdave@lasercommunity.com.

Sounds like great news. An unbiased forum would really help the industry, I think. I've often wanted to know specific differences between products, but never actually was able to ask, and the one time I did, my account got suspended. Embarassed If I had been able to ask I never would have bought the piece of **** laser I ended up with. Mad

One thing though, there shouldn't be any trades or sales in the forum. I remember people getting screwed consistently a couple years back when WL decided to test the idea here, as I'm sure some of the older members of the community can attest. If there was a reputable middle-man company, maybe it would work; otherwise, the same dishonesty would happen again.

We're probably going to start with basic changes to the site. The current forum we have now does not have the functions and capabilities we hope to implement in "Laser Community 2.0" so we may have to start from scratch. We are still planning the steps needed to complete this project. I'll release something as soon as I figure everything out.

Meanwhile, we want the community's input on everything! How do we make Laser Community a better place for you? Keep the suggestions rollin'! We may even be searching for dedicated moderators for Laser Community. Everything is still in the air at the moment but one thing is for certain, we want Laser Community to be as free and unbiased as possible. We want to attract not only enthusiasts, but professionals and laser companies alike.

I see there are several laser forums out there at the moment and we are very interested in having the board moderators and owners of each forum help us build the community together. I strongly believe that unity is power. Can we forget our differences in the past and finally come together and each play a part in the greater picture?

I noticed a large concern is the trading and reselling of lasers. I will bring this up in our next meeting. Meanwhile, does anyone have any suggestions of how a market place could work?

I think we should keep all the old topics, and users, people would be unhappy if their accounts on this forum were reset/deleted. Crying or Very sad

For the Market Place, I suggest making it limited to people that have a minimum of 100 posts and has been here for about a month.

I think having trades is not a big deal if there is a middleman.

Heres idea 1:

member a wants to sell his Spyder II. member b wants to buy this spyder II for $500. to initiate the transaction, member b sends LC $500. member a sends member b the laser. If member b is satisfied with the laser, LC sends member a $500. if member b is not satisfied, member b sends member a his laser back. when member a receives his laser back, he notifies LC and LC returns $500 to member b.

here's the fallback, what if member b gets the laser and breaks it and says he is not satisfied? then member a is screwed...

Heres idea 2:

member a wants to sell his Spyder II. member b wants to buy this spyder II for $500. member a sends LC his laser for them to look over. if LC approves that it is in working order and at the right mW, they send it to member b. if LC disapproves, the laser is sent back to member a.

fallback is, extra shipping charges and LC is screwed if anything is damaged via the shipping process...

anyone else has ideas?

We know what a middle man is, Smile
There should be members on the Market Section that are labeled trusted and will accept being a MM(middleman), and the people that want to trade sends money to the MM(because the MM is spending his own time to help others).
Also, if the MM recieves the item(not broken before shipment) the person is selling, damaged, it will be the sellers fault, the seller should of added insurance, and better packaging.

I'd really like that! ?The more technical things, from homebuild N2 lasers to laser physics.

A man-in-the-middle is a nice tactic. but a good feedback system may be nice too.

You don't know anything about ebay, a majority of the people in ebay are scammers.

I think ebay has their scammers and many more legitimate businesses. Whenever I purchase something on ebay, I always check the person's rating and read through some of the feedback. While there are scammers, it's pretty easy to pick them out. That's why ebay is so good...

I think LC will just have to figure out what the best way is because I think it will take too much time to create something as massive as ebay. They probably want to spend their time elsewhere...

I like the changes on the LC's homepage, keep it up!! haha, I actually clicked to read this thread using the link on the homepage, very good and convenient! Very Happy
