So I just got a green laser from china it is a <50mw, first of all it was 30 dollars is that a good deal and also after I turn it on for a few seconds the light will dim, it might have old batteries in it so is that the problem?

That first peak may just be the <50mw, and it will dim very fast as the peak voltage of the battery drops to normal levels, and these cheap laser pointers don't have any proper current regulation of the diode, so they drop in power output. New batteries will help, but you always will have a more dimmer beam at the end of the battery and the peak of (hopefully) 50mw will only occur with fresh batteries.

Next, check for an IR filter. If you bought something as cheap as this, you really want to check if there is an IR filter. If there is, you have a slightly more divergent powerfull IR bundle on top of you green. That is, about 2~3x powerfull in a bit bad case. And, IR is practically invisible, so you won't notice being hit until it is really too late. And your laser safety glasses probably won't protect against IR (you do have laser safety glasses, right?).

my 50 mw laser from ebay needs to be about 30°C to make a bright beam, try to warm up the laser in your hands for about 1 minute, maybe it is brighter then

That's quite a crude way to temperature-tune the pump diode Very Happy

Usually the cheaper models are rated by their peak output and not their average over a given time. The peak is normally a short burst of high output at the startup of the laser and can last a few seconds. Output then will drops to what it probably should have been rated at.

I don't think $30 is a rip, even if it's much lower average output then 50mW. It's just that you probably didn't get what you had expected.
