guys, you don't take apart the ps3 for the diode. you buy the sled with the diode off ebay for 85 dollars, stop saying you destroy a 600 dollar ps3 for the laser and read the earlyer posts

Why do something like that? It's a love for lasers, but that's just killing one of the greatest consoles ever made.

meh i could argue that point, but most blu-ray players are even more expensive then ps3s so at one point ps3's were the cheapest way to get these diodes

Believe it or not, but there have been people that have wrecked their PS3's already or they just crapped out for whatever reasons. I had my hands on a broken PS3 and I contemplated taking it apart for the Blu-Ray laser, but then I found out how much work it would be so I just sold it to someone else. Oh and by the way, do a google search for the PS3 Grill. Some people out there have done some really strange things with damaged PS3's.

So the laser is violet from the Playstation? How many different colors can you get in a consumer laser?

Good question... Every PS3 diode has 3 lasers in it, plus a photodiode to monitor output. Technically speaking, and with a very steady soldering hand, you can turn one PS3 diode into a 3-color laser pointer... granted you have enough electric circuit knowledge to make a smart enough circuit capable of driving all 3 lasers.

The 3 colors are
* Violet... for BluRay disks
* Red... for DVDs
* IR... for CDs

They diverge diffrently if you don't have apochromatic or achromatic lenses I think.

lol. ps3 is not cheap in the first place. if we want to get a violet laser out of it we might as well just get the real stuff.

Read the whole topic, man. We're talking about disassembling a PS3 sled. Which is only a reader. Not the whole PS3. It costs about $80 on ebay.. Confused

Actualy, the 3 colors all come from one diode. I saw it on eBay, the thing has like 5 pins. It's called a BRIR diode. And you really will need that achromatic lens. Smile
