so yeah.
I live in cleveland.
and this was on the news two days ago.
"Four people were arrested Wednesday night and accused of pointing a green laser beam at two passenger planes attempting to land at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
The laser was also pointed at a police helicopter, temporarily blinding the pilot, and at a LifeFlight chopper that responds to emergencies for MetroHealth Medical Center. The police helicopter pilots said the laser beam entered their cockpit and struck the pilot directly in the eyes. The beam also created a disorienting matrix effect, with the light bouncing back and forth between the windows and control panels.
"If not for the skill of our pilots, there could have been a crash," police Lt. Thomas Stacho said.
Liana Wiemels, 25, of Parma Heights, and Brook Park residents Justin Dewalt, 24; Michael Wiemels, 19; and Charles Hendricks, 24, were arrested on suspicion of interfering with aircraft operations.

basically, its people like this thats going to mess everything up for the rest of us.
it pisses me off.
Air traffic controllers called for police shortly before 11:30 p.m., when jet pilots reported seeing the beam. The planes were able to land without incident, controllers said.
As the police chopper approached the airport, the laser beam was aimed at it from the area between West 130th and West 140th streets near Puritas Avenue. The police pilots followed the suspects' car along West 130th toward Enterprise Avenue.
Patrolmen stopped a black Pontiac Grand Am. Dewalt, who was in the back seat, had a $500 laser device in a case and a marijuana pipe containing residue in his pocket, police said. He was also accused of having drug paraphernalia.
The FBI is also investigating the airport incident.
"If the case is handled federally, they face up to 20 years in prison," FBI Special Agent Scott Wilson said. "We take this very seriously." |

it should have turned out like this.

| Surely the divergence would be a fair bit by the time it reached the aircraft though? |

Indeed, but because of the high power there still will be light at that distance. Not enough for eye damage, but enough for disorientation (just a guess, somebody do the math please). |
