High power IR laser possible from a greenie??

Just a thought, but couldn't one just take say for example a 100mW greenie (usually a half watt diode) and just take the crystals out and refocus, resulting in half watt 808nm out?? Just a thought! I have a 300mW green with a 1.5w diode, that'd be some serious burning power!
Be nice if you could get a pointer with a detachable barrel section with the crystal set in, and the lens section screwed onto that. Then you could just switch from visible mode to fire-making mode!![/b] |

First: afety should be very important with IR lasers of this power, buy some glasses protecting explicitly against IR, not just the standard lasershades.
Second, it will work for a burning pointer, but the diode and the crystals are aligned pretty carefull, so each time you want green, you're busy aliigning it, succeeding might more chance than possible. |
