| What voltage would I need for a 980nm 10mw laser? If you can choose voltages (like between 5v and 9v), what would be the minimum for a solid, 'bright' dot about 50 feet away? |

With IR lasers the idea is that it is "more or less" invisible. If you are suggesting getting a 10mW IR laser, you wont really see anything. If you buy a 400+ mW 808nm IR laser you will see a slightly red tinted dot. So the voltage of running a 10mW IR laser is totaly irrelevant. Bottom line is, its 10mW and more or less invisible.
If you want to see a "bright" dot at 50 or so foot, you want a green. But if your heart is set on IR then 10mW is WELL to low of a power for seeing a "bright" dot. Especialy at that wavelength.
I dont know your application, however if its just gonna be a bit of a big boys toy, then a 10mW Ir at 980nm isnt really going to be any fun. _________________ Thanks,

I know that IR is invisible; that's why I put bright in ' ' I meant bright to a camera that can see IR. I'm using it with a wiimote to control a computer mouse on a projected screen. What voltage would be good? |

Shoot, an IR camera will be able to see your TV remote control's IR port light up if you hit some buttons on the remote.. (Try it if you havent!) _________________ Eat Right, Exercise, Die Anyway!

That's a pretty witty response for someone with 5 posts here bub. Anyways..
Lets see here.
(W)=(I)*(E) So you're going to need to find out the amperage of the diode to find an operating voltage I think.
Anyone got any ideas on resistance, if applicable? _________________ Eat Right, Exercise, Die Anyway!

| I have been trying to get an IR diode of some salvaged equipment but with no luck. I should have just bought one and saved the money. lol. |

Go for a complete module, diodes are quite fragile, and a module can take more (if you power it with batteries, voltage spikes are still nasty). And, a module already has collimating optics. Building your own diode driver can also be done, but it takes a bit time to build a decent one, not just a resistor, although that will work to, as the output power isn't really important to keep stable.
5mw is more than enough, and would be better for safety, 980nm is invisible but still there. |
