I have harvested the 405nm diode from an Xbox 360 HD DVD drive ($49.99). I'm using the LM317 laser driver circuit. I did not use a boost driver, but instead used two A23 12 volt batteries. It is being run at 35mA, and the host is a Dorcy I bought from target for $20. Total cost of about $100. Its 10mW, and here are some pictures:

Awesome, but to bad that A23 12V batts are quite hard to find...

Wow, awesome. I thought HD-DVD was red Confused Do you happen to know the power of it?

Great work !

How many mW is it ?

Actually most stores around me sell A23 batteries. I was really suprised. It is 10mW for improved diode life.

Then you'rs lucky ; my stores only sell AAs, AAAs, and 4.5V (I don't know how it's called). Also I have a hard time finding AAAAs for my UV LED flashlight, and 0.4mm button cells.

The power output is 10mW...

I like very much the casing. What are your other lasers in the 4th pic ? The blu-ray seems as bright as the others.

Where did you get the laser diode housing/focusing assembly? Do you have a pinout for this particular HDDVD drive? The local shop has a bunch for $50 and I want to try this, but after my experiments with ordinary DVD burners Im not too confident I can do it without killing the diode. Also, where can I find the schematic you referred to, based on the LM317?

You would probably be fine working with this diode, as long as you are grounded when you handle it. I was pretty rough on mine, lol. I was very suprised it still worked. I will get more information up, like the pinout, later tonight.

Thanks - it would be very much appreciated.

Edit: I forgot about the blue lasers section of the board... turns out there is a wealth of information in there. Still have a question before I buy a drive...

Is the laser in the XBox drive the same as the PS3?

Well, no one has been able to find out who makes the diode or what company the part number is associated with, but it is pretty similar in power and the number of mA it takes to achieve this power.

Hmm the schematic is not working for me. Is the LM317 used as a voltage or current regulator?

What kind of current did you find necessary for it to lase?

Edit: Working now, and I can see that it is used as a current regulator.

It started lasing around 20 or so mA I think. I'm running it at 35mA. I heard somebody measured this diode at 10mW at 35mA and 15mW at 40mA, but I wouldnt drive it that hard.
