You can get an Xbox 360 HDDVD add-on for $49.00 due to the death of the HD DVD format. While I know readers aren't very powerful (no burning stuff) it could be cool to mess with for almost nothing. Has anyone ripped a laser from the add-on? How does it look? Worth $50.00?

I got 2 diodes from one but still need to seperate them from what may be a heatsink. Hopefully these drives will be able to be turned into cheap violet lasers.

I'm also fairly interested in this idea. The technology can't be that different than that of the Blu Ray lasers you see tutorials for all the time. For $50, I can't see a decent reason not to give this a shot.

Good work, you(we?)'re almost there! Please post back with results, and maybe even a semi-detailed How-To for people who would like to try this but have no experience in building lasers.

Is that from the HD-DVD add on, or from a blu-ray player?
