Compared to a 15mW Green 532nm, how visible would a 15mW 405nm laser beam be? Is it like 650nm where you need crazy high power to have a bright beam?

From what I understand yes, I think a good comparison is using 650nm as a good guide to how bright a violet laser would be at the same mW rating.

But even 10mW isn't too shabby. Check out this video (near the end) it shows him using the laser which is a PS3 diode, and have been known to be about 10mW. It looks alright as brightness is concerned.

Here, I found a video of a guy who has a box that can switch between red and violet, they look pretty similar to me in terms of brightness.

I still think the violet looks brighter in the videos. Is violet just a more intense color to our eyes?

Well, I now successfully have a 25mW violet laser from eBay. And all I can say is its awesome!

brightness...yes, brightness. Well, when your looking at the pure violet color on a non-fluorescing material, the 25mW violet seems as bright as a 5mW red, maybe a tad brighter. But when it fluoresces on something (for example white paper it turns blue) its much brighter.

Here is an example. As you can see on the wall its a dim violet (non-fluorescing), and the blue on some white T-shirts, its quite bright.

And here is another neat one. Its actually 'charging' the white shirt below it, which lights up the wall.

And Tide vs the violet laser Very Happy

Any who, violet is a very unique color, and very fun to play around with. Also due to the lower wavelength and tighter focusable beam, I can actually burn stuff with this thing. Possibly even light matches!

i would say that violet is closer to 635nm red than 650nm. so it will have a dim(but still visible) beam at 10mW

405nm is much less visible then 650nm, closer to 700nm for compaeison.

A couple links that might be useful, covers both dark adapted vision and normal.
