Hey all, I'm considering buying a new custom built 1 Watt 808 nm IR laser and was wondering if anyone could help me on what to expect out of this sort of product? It would come with a pair of safety goggles and a five point safety system and is expected to run somewhere between 1.1 Watts and 1.5 Watts. I watched a short video of it cutting black electric tape and was amazed at it's power, this product would run around 1200 USD. If anyone could help with some of the specifics such as extra precautionary actions, what kind of burning power this would produce, or the distance at which this unit could travel or produce heat, it would be greatly appreciated, thanks for reading |

A 1 watt+ ir laser will burn FAST but only up close, they have awful collimation so the beam spreads to be virtually ineffective at distances over a foot. I've seen a vid with someone burning an off white wall black with one at like 3 inches away in 10 seconds. _________________ Spyderman II GX

| Thanks for the reply Spyderman, any guess to how far the laser will actually travel, and if the collimation is that bad does that mean the laser will not harm your eyes at a certain distance? Also that's interesting about the wall... |

| 1200 seems kind of expensive for an ir. what kind of laser is it? there is a guy in china that sells ir diodes on ebay for much cheaper. you can get a 2watt diode for $100 |

The 1 watt laser I would buy would be the exact same model as the Scorpius from WickedLasers, a completely portable model, running on triple As. I hope this helps |

| a 2watt laser off aaa batteries probably wont last very long.. but its most likely just for burning/party tricks anyways.. if you were to make this laser yourself it could cost somewhere around $200. possibly even less (not including the glasses) |

| Wow yeah that would save me a few bucks, but would the new one be as reliable? Also if you know where a good tutorial could be found, I'm open to checking it out, thanks for the info |

Yeah I'd shop around some more - diode lasers are dirt cheap these days, and I didn't pay much more than that for my 20 watt CO2 laser (if you PM me I can tell you where to get one from - I bought mine slightly used off Ebay but a new one will run you about $2K from the manufacturer and burn a hell of a lot more than 1.5 watts of 808nm. The manufacturer also sells just the parts and a kit for cheaper if you're technically good and don't mind building it yourself. But you have to be careful there as that kind of laser is triggered by about 20KV and if you don't know what you're doing you could get hurt or worse).
Here's a vid of my laser in action (I have 3 more also listed):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVxGf1iF63U
But, for building your own diode laser for cheaper than that, check out this site:

I don't have time to comb thru it for direct links to diode lasers and building them, but I swear about everything you'd want to know about lasers is there.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVxGf1iF63U _________________ Lasers are like potato chips - you can't have just one!

| I have checked with Techlasers on the 1.5W IR laser. They currently don't have anything even close to that power in their stock. They said the highest power is stock was 500mW. The 500-1500mW is very misleading. PM me for the name and contact for a company that CAN provide a 808nm 1.8W focusable IR laser. I am placing an order with them on Tuesday. |
