I got my diode and focal coulminater in the other day and went to work.
I powered it up and it sent a burning laser beam out. Cool I'm excited. I twisted the head to shut off the laser. It shuts off. I get some more matches and twist on again. weak beam no heat. Mmm take it apart. Diode leads crossed (shorted) Ok straighten leads and try again. Weak beam no heat. New batteries weak beam no heat
After some time I take the columinator or focal lense out the apature is plastic and melted and the apature is oval and melted now.
I have a feeling my burning laser is now a 5mw pointer now .
Where did I go wrong? |

Laserdiodes are extremely sensitive when it comes to ESD. That means the slightest spark for example caused by a shortcut and the diode fails immediately. I've killed several cheap diodes until I found out how sensitive they really are!
And to be honest: I doubt it'll even put out 5mW. After being shortened I experienced the diodes to heaten up and consuming way more current then they should a the rated voltage, putting out nothing but heat and only a light that is so dim it's not worth mention it. |

| New batteries may have been a bad idea as well. 3 volts is technicaly overpowering lots of these diodes. |

What got me was that it fried the back apature.
Gonna work on another with Mo tech next month (V board and push button and bigger Batts 2 "C"s from a 3cell flashlight = more room to work. And of course a keylock.
