I used a lot of MILES (Multi Integrated Laser Engagement System) which uses an infrared laser--not sure of wavelength, but it's visible with ANPVS7 image intensifier night vision goggles. This was for about 10 years, 1985-1995 roughly. Now my eyes are not so good (ok, I'm 54, but still...).
Just wondering if MILES could have affected my retinas and how I could prove it if so. This is not an entirely selfish thing, they're still using it and thousands of grunt types are exposed to it continually.
Anyone have any good info on this??
Thanks

Hey Vik, I'm X military too and also worked on and around laser guidance systems. I would think an eye doctor could examine your eyes and tell you if you have damage due to laser radiation. My eye doctor told me he would be able to tell if I had any, but he said I didn't My eyes are fine though, and I asked him just out of curiosity. _________________ Best Regards Chargerman

| Very few specs are avalable on Google. But from what I've read ,these laser engagement systems use very lowpowered lasers, like Class 1 or 2.If this is so, your eye damage must be from somewhere else, and you'll not be able to sue them or anything. |

Thanks for your replies. I'd just been curious about it for a long time and it seemed like this was a good place to ask about it, as I don't have a clue about invisible (or otherwise) lasers, not really.
I hadn't thought about the Pave systems, I was around those, too, a lot, and I bet THEY'RE not low powered.
And, I guess I don't trust the government, I remember reading about nuclear tests on exposed GI's, 40 years ago asbestos was safe, so I can see them using "eyesafe" systems that really fry your retinas.
Any opinions about the eyesafety of the new laser dazzlers they're using in postconflict areas now? I saw one advertised and they were shining it right in the subject's eyes to demonstrate to him how well it worked, that would scare me if I were the subject, he seemed ok with it. I'd thought of buying one of those.
I guess regardless it's safer than an M240...
