Buying domains and selling them on eBay for such prices is very common these days.

I don't see the point of having a domain name with "iPod touch" in it...

Some people amaze me with their willingness to buy anything. Confused

A good iPod Touch doamin is worth good money, if you have the time, patience and knowledge.

But I'm with Spyrorocks on this one - these suck. Useless. For SEO purposes - maybe...Having the keywords in the domain is good...But there are certainly still available names with those keywords in them, and you can register them for ~8$.

I hate domain hoarders. They are just as bad as spammers.

Notice he has a "new" account on e-bay, less than one month old (despite his claim of having to change accounts) and the first or second thing he has for sale is a $200,000 domain?

So, here is the message I just sent to that e-bay user....... :)

Yeah, I'm sure you've gotten hundreds of messages regarding your really long and difficult to remember - worthless domain name.

I sure hope e-bay made some money off you just for listing it.

Your domain is worth the value you paid for it. It is simply too long and has a hyphen in it. People don't pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for long hyphenated names. Face it. You're out the money because you will never sell it.

You've made thousands? When, over the last 10 years?

Phil

*edit*

I created a bogus listing (but didn't submit) to see what a $200,000 item would run, fee wise on e-bay...They would have made less than $10.00 on the insertion fee for listing in two categories, starting price of $200,000 and a buy it now of $200,000.

It's a crap shoot. You pick a name that isn't trademarked or reserved try to set up some stupid page that generates traffic (banners and links) in the hopes that someday you'll make a fortune when some fool comes along and offers you a lot of money for it.

Take MP3.com for example. One hoarder mentioned that the domain could have sold for millions of dollars due to its popularity and its simple name. However, the creator of that site would have just moved on with another name if MP3.com wasn't available. No one would pay millions for a domain name if they were just starting up a small company.

MP3.com is only worth a lot based on traffic patterns, ads, popups etc.

Something like;

thiscouldbeyourdomainontheinternet.com is too long and hard to remember.

mywebpage.com is easier and it doesn't take all day to type out.

So what's a hoarder to do? Register any and all possible name combinations? Yes...and they pay a lot of money to have all of them. Most all lose out eventually because of the reoccurring costs to renew them...some have a link where you can contact them if you want to purchase it - then they get greedy. I've been quoted several times a price of over $500,000 from hoarders in hopes that I'm stupid enough to pay for it.

Legal action? It has to be a registered trademark, service mark or rights reserved (prior to) the name being registered from ICANN. If you can prove that your trademark, service mark or whatever existed through documents before the domain was registered, then a judge may motion the person who has the domain to release it to you. But it doesn't always work in your favor. Again, it's a crap shoot.

I hope that helps explain it…that’s how I understand it anyways.

Merry Christmas and stuff! Don't shoot your eye out with your laser!

You invest in it, by holding the domain name and paying all the fees for it until a company wants to buy it.

BTW. you could make any starting price you want for ebay.
And as you can see, the price was exaggerated and no one bid on it.
