When I was at the air force academy, they were teaching us about projecting microwaves and lasers from a big attachment on hummers to heat up bodies just below the point of boiling to disperse riots. Anyone ever hear of this?

Oh yes - it's called the Active Denial System, or just Active Denial. It is (as far as I know - based on what I've read) still in the testing phase, but might be deployed around 2010.

It uses short wave microwaves to heat up the water in skin to make people feel like they are burning.

Earlier this year they had a press conference at Moody AFB in Georgia where they fired up the thing and invited the press to be on the business end of it. There were some takers and plenty of hilarious news footage of reporters jumping around like someone had lit a fire under their backsides! Laughing

If you Google Active Denial you should find zillions of hits, and I think there are still a few videos up on YouTube.

Radar will do the same...although I wouldn't recommend standing in front of one for long. Very Happy

Maybe that's why they've warned us for years when working around aircraft transmitting. Nothing like frying your insides without you knowing it.

Wow, this will make me neve want to be in a riot/mob evern again, but i never will be one in the first place.

Ido'nt think they should use it, just because they don't know what the outcome will be on all people in the riot..

This is a common misconception that just doesn't make any sense. Microwaves/UV/IR and whatever else does NOT fry your insides. A microwave cooks from the outside in.

Nope, from the inside out. Microwaves vibrates the water inside an object to heat it up via friction. It is from the inside out.

Remindes me of the guy who worked as a guard at a transmission tower in Alaska I think it was. He used to sit infront of the microwave dish to keep himself warm. One night there was a test transmission at a higher power that he wasn't told about. They found him the next morning dead in his chair. The cans in the 6-pack of beer next to him had all burst from boiling. Autopsy confirmed that he was cooked from the inside out.

It all depends on the wavelength....the ADS weapon behaves more like IR light - you stand in front of a fire and the upper layers of your skin are bombarded by far-IR radiation and heat up. Your skin gets too hot and you pull away - supposedly this is an analogy to what it feels like to get hit with the ADS.

However, far-IR and high-energy microwaves can't penetrate most substances more than a hair's width or so - enough energy and both will burn the top layer of skin.

But oven microwaves simply pass thru most substances, with some resistance along the way. Near the other end of the spectrum are X-rays - most of the photons will pass thru the body, but not all - just enough get stopped by bone, metal, and thick tissue to render an image. Some microwave photons might pass thru flesh, but quite a few get absorbed by tissue and this is what causes the heating.

Being that all electromagnetic waves behave in a similar fashion, obviously the more material and substance the photons must pass thru, the less that will get thru. Visible light gets dimmer the further away you are from the source, as it is the atmosphere that is absorbing the light.

Only in a vacuum, will all the photons travel unchecked for infinity, until they hit matter and become absorbed.
