Like the title says, how powerful are Blu-ray lasers? Are they comparable to a laser pointer, or are they way above?
I remember reading about people modifying the laser in a DVD player, so would this be possible with a Blu-ray player? |

Most of the ones I've heard of are only a few milliwatts - maybe 5 or ten mw. _________________ Lasers are like potato chips - you can't have just one!
Nexus 95mw, Confirmed 173 mw Pulsar, , 131mw argon-ion laser, Core laser, and Signature Fusion 125mw, 100mw blue - average output 131mw - lab laser, and a 20 WATT (yeah you read that right!) CO2 laser!:

So they're not very powerful at all. Strange. Seeing as DVD burning lasers are a few hundred mW, I thought Blu-ray would be at least as powerful.
BTW, are HD-DVD lasers similar to the bluray ones? |

| keep in mind these lasers are coming from readers, not burners. readers contain very low power diodes, the one cd drive i have lists the diodes as being only 0.2mw |

That's an interesting point... there are a lot of CD/DVD burners out there that are probably ending up in the dump. They would have to be capable of being modulated. I wonder what their specs are. _________________ Take care,

I would like to get my hands on a Blu-Ray burner.
I still don't understand why they call it blue, it should be Violet-Ray. |

I don't know, "violet ray" doesn't roll off the tongue quite as nice.
It's all about marketing. They probably paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to settle on the name Blu-Ray, by the time all was said and done. |

| Well, just call it "Vio-Ray"! But as for power, the ones in the PS3s are <5 to 10 mWs... The WL Sonar is reportedly 20mWs. I don't know that anybody here has dismantled a Blu-Ray burner drive, so I don't know about those. |

the WL sonar is pulsed, you could run a PS3 405nm diode at probably 15-20mw pulsed.
a blu-ray burner kicks out 60mw CW |

| I don't think it's CW. All CD and DVD drives use pulsed lasers, and this burner would cost $10.000 if it was CW. Which is impossible for burning and reading discs. |
