I'd like to see a relatively inexpensive laser that could be modulated by a signal; something at audio or TTL/CMOS levels. That would open up a whole other world of experimentation.

What type of bandwidth does that intail and what kind of distance do you want it to travel. I work in fiber optics and there are inexpensive tranceivers available that use a RCLED, not technically a laser, but visible none the less and they output as much as 2dBm, which is roughly 1.6 miliwatts. You could transmit the light via fiber, or you can couple a collimating lens to the end of a fiber pigtail and transmit through the air.

One way to do this is with an acousto optic modulator or AOM. You just shoot the laser through it and you get a diffracted beam and the through beam. You can very easily control the amplitude, and somewhat easily control the frequency of the diffracted beam. I have heard they use them in those giant copy machines. You can also just buy them but they are kinda expensive.

If you use just a diode you can just vary the current you are using to power it with. The supplies I used for diode lasers had an analog current modulation input that had like a 1 MHz bandwidth. You could probably build a driver for pretty cheap and use something like that.

modulation is used in laser shows and data transfer systems, by changing the brightness of the laser at high speeds you are able to create patterns/transmit data where you couldn't if the laser was always on

i don't think the spider can be modulated as easily with its tec cooling system and whatnot
