I'd like to see a relatively inexpensive laser that could be modulated by a signal; something at audio or TTL/CMOS levels. That would open up a whole other world of experimentation. _________________ Take care,

| What type of bandwidth does that intail and what kind of distance do you want it to travel. I work in fiber optics and there are inexpensive tranceivers available that use a RCLED, not technically a laser, but visible none the less and they output as much as 2dBm, which is roughly 1.6 miliwatts. You could transmit the light via fiber, or you can couple a collimating lens to the end of a fiber pigtail and transmit through the air. |

One way to do this is with an acousto optic modulator or AOM. You just shoot the laser through it and you get a diffracted beam and the through beam. You can very easily control the amplitude, and somewhat easily control the frequency of the diffracted beam. I have heard they use them in those giant copy machines. You can also just buy them but they are kinda expensive.
If you use just a diode you can just vary the current you are using to power it with. The supplies I used for diode lasers had an analog current modulation input that had like a 1 MHz bandwidth. You could probably build a driver for pretty cheap and use something like that. |

| modulation is used in laser shows and data transfer systems, by changing the brightness of the laser at high speeds you are able to create patterns/transmit data where you couldn't if the laser was always on |

| i don't think the spider can be modulated as easily with its tec cooling system and whatnot |
