the biggest problem is that Wicked lasers is backed up for almost 2 weeks. They went from relatively minor sales of lasers from an unknown company, to getting hundreds of orders a day because of that video. If anything they are growing further behind, i'm sure they'll find a way to take care of that problem soon but still i ordered my housing a good bit back, still waiting.

Anyone know what the power on the modified flashlight is equivalent to?

you go to the Wicked lasers web site(can't post link yet) it's mfgcn, just do a google and you get the laser that cost 4.50, they actually marked the laser with a statement so you'll know which one it is.

I tried but it didn't work...not sure why yet but it laser could have been bad to begin with it was a failing drive before.

Probly, i have 2 drives just incase one has an open diode/doesn't work/burns out. Planning to use a 10 ohm resistor to begin with though. I'll decide on going to a lighter one after making sure i don't burn it out(without a resistor i managed to burn up the diode that came in the housing with ease, it even seems the board tried what what appear to be about a 1 second power cycle(kept cutting off and on about every second) but it would still smoke off a little more every cycle until it didn't light anymore. Reassured me that i had better put a resistor in the circuit even though the vid does not mention it.

I cant load the page on my laptop but judging by the link, it's the same one that was jsut posted on LC, and the concensus there is that you will fry your diode because it requires much more sensative electronics than a flashlight, and needs regulation of volts/amps. Also, even if yo uhave a flashlight that meets thosre requirements, then you have the problem of cooling. Lastly, you will be overdriving a diode and it will shorten it's life considerably, though if you have the $$$ to afford diode replacement, it might ery well be worth it to you.

Let me say I am working on designing a milti-watt laser from a maglight, however it has regulators in place and I still am having problems keeping the current in check with _5_ diodes!

that's why you should simply use a resistor in the circuit to prevent overpowering, that's also why you would ideally use a thermal compound such as arctic silver 5 in the diode housing. If you take some looks around on some other forums you'll notice people using similar methods to solve these problems. Most people use a 4 ohm resistor but i'll be using a 10 ohm because i don't see where 4 would make a sufficient difference in the circuit.

Ok... I'm well on my way to having this done, so I'll give my $0.02:
Use this flashlight: http://www.dorcy.com/products.aspx?p=414262
It has a regulator board in there already, which happens to cut the voltage and amperage down to what's almost exactly right for the DVD Burner diodes.
This is a good DVD Burner drive to use: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129007
Some people have got about 390mW steady output with one o' these babies. Cool (Of course, you have to do everything almost flawlessly to get that kind of output)

Note that the diode gets REALLY hot when you put it in the flashlight. (It's not much of a heatsink) So use plenty of the absolute best Arctic Silver, and find/make some aluminum rings that will fit around the Wicked Diode Module. (They need to come into contact with the inside of the flashlight) Again, using plenty of Arctic Silver.

This is a really good tutorial of how to do it: http://www.'unauthorized text'.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1181635652/0
(Much better than the Metacafe/Instructables version, at any rate! Wink)

So a quick update to those interested. Did finally get in the dvd drive from forum member on another site and did a few tests. I'm using 4.4 ohms worth of resistance and it's working perfectly. No overheating or overload. I'll finish putting everything together and posting some vids later.
