thanks man,
There are often fun artifacts when photographing lasers. I still got long way to go to take pics as good as some forum members here. _________________ - Hand held laser 350mW+ - May 2007 - GREAT LASER

Not easily. You'll need a very powerful red laser to see the beam. At the common 655-660nm frequency (the pulsar is apparently around 660 nm) you'll probably need at least a quarter watt of red (250 mW) as a start.
Green lasers appear brighter simply because the eye is most sensitive to this frequency of light (compared to a DVD diode or a pulsar). A 200 mW red will burn just as good as a 200 mW green.. tho it will not appear even close to as bright. This is just a bias of our eyes. See pic below to get an idea.
I've got a 'homemade' red I made sometime ago, it's about 25 mW @ 635 nm - the eye is more sensitive to this frequency, so this laser appears at least as visible as a 150 mW pulsar. However the beam is very faint.
(See this link for a description of my homemade laser:)

)
One thing with red lasers is most of the light forward scatters, unlike a greenie where the light scatters equally in all directions. This means the beam of a red laser is often more visible looking towards the laser.
HOWEVER, if there's any kind of fog/haze/goo in the air the beam on a powerful red laser will really pop out. I took my homemade laser out a few nights back. It was a warm, hazy, humid night, after a hard rain. Looking away from the laser (towards the spot) the beam only looked as bright as a 5-10 mW greenie (I had set the laser down). I then walked at least 100 yards away from the laser and looked back... and looking towards the laser the beam was SO BRIGHT. Just a solid blade of red light. It was awesome. It looked brighter than the beam of a 100 mW greenie - but only under slightly foggy conditions looking towards the laser. Very impressive tho.

Many factors determine how well you see beam. If the beam is coming towards you it will appear brighter ! If the air is humid it will appear much brighter than on a dry day.
Here is pic I took of 140mW 650nm Pulsars, and two 202mW 660nm reds in semi lit conditions with less than 1 sec exposure. No smoke, but it was humid.
This is how beams appeared to the eye as well.
However, if you move to the side or behind the laser, it will appear way less visible. |
So were these pictures of the lasers just the way they are, or were there any optics involved? Just wanted to clarify. Thanks. |

I know what you mean. Even better was the time that I shone my piddle squat 1mw module through my cousins bedroom window. He had just finished watching Assult on Precinct 13 and it was about 10:30pm. The window split the beam and made it look like multiple snipers were aiming at him. He also said that he could see the beam quite clearly. Scared the living daylights out of him |
