You couldn't use it unless you had your own personal power plant.

Unfortuantely, I don't think this will be operational anytime soon (if ever). You need a small power plant to operate it so it's currently impractical.

Power plant? Isn't it a chemical laser?

MTHEL is a "chemical oxygen iodine laser" - the beam is created by a chemical reaction. I'm sure some electricity is needed for other things like cooling perhaps, and beam directing, but not to generate the beam itself. However, the chemicals are very toxic, so the reason that this laser may never get to the battlefield is because of the danger to the soldiers who have to operate it.

The military is currently looking to replace this technology with DPSS lasers - massive kilowatt class versions of the laser pointers we carry in our pockets - but without the KTP crystal to make the light a pretty shade of green! DPSS lasers are, compared to other types of electrically powered lasers, very efficient users of electricity.

Then wouldn't the MTHEL be more of a particle beam weapon than a laser weapon?

Well it is a laser but I wouldn't really term it as a weapon... it is used to target and destroy missles and artillary, so more of a defense system.

No. It emits photons.

What they should do is have the laser be inputed into a hollogram and make it look like a skull and crossbones. if that is possible to still retain the power, then that woul d be the ultimate laser.

Well, you can't really make it look like anything seeing as it's Infrared.
