Blu-Ray is violet, not blue.

i guess the marketing people thought that "Violet-Ray" and "Purpl-Ray" didn't sound as good? |

I would think so:
"Vio-Ray" it's pronounced and might be confused with "Bio-Ray", "Bio-Ray" sounds sort like a biologic weapon.
"Purpl-Ray" is... Ummm...
"Violet-Ray" is too long.
So they decided to use Blu-Ray instead, the name is misleading though.
^ That's my guess. _________________ >>Click here to go to my laser userbars site!<<

Oh yes I did, but you made it after I made my post. I think that it shouldn't be Blu-Ray, but ViolenceDisk... |

Surely if the Chinese are starting to produce 473nm pointers (true blue) then these should start appearing on fleabay in the near future? But if the 473nm diodes have no mass market applications as the violet 405nm diodes have for HD DVD readers/writers, then who knows? |

| I think there are only 443nm diodes, not 473nm. |

You "can" make a diode of any wavelength. Lifetime is the limiting factor. _________________

| I don't get it. So you can make even 555nm diodes? |

Yes, They do not last or even work without cost prohibitive cooling. _________________

| Building a laser is much harder than you might think, especially a blue one. With a violate diode like blu-ray, it might be easier, but you might waste more money blowing diodes than it would take you to just buy one. It takes tons of alignment and electronics, optics that have to be cut to size, filters, etc. |
I guess someone enterprising could make a kit. |
