Ok, got my dvd burner and have disassembled and am down to whats shown in the pics? Is the laser the copper thing at the top? should I leave it in this carrier and let it go through the provide lenses or take it out and get another laser module so I can use it in a more conventional pointer type application.
Thanks

Ok... Trace the optical train both ways... One end should end at a lens, the other at the diode. And yeah, you should probably leave it in there until you get a heatsink and case ready for it... At least that's what I'd do!
EDIT: Actually, flip the thing over and look for the lens... There's most likely a right-angle prism that reflects the beam... I can't believe I forgot that!

Update:
Laser is top center, but lens is bottom center.
But the 2 things (upper left and middle right) are dotted redline is there path?

| Is there any way you can post a bigger picture of it ? Unfortunately, it is most likely what is called, and open can diode - in other words, no glass to protect the delicate insides....

Camera is not the best this close. Laser 1 was under some foil and appears to have more circuitry around it (if it is a laser).

| Hmmm - I cannot really make anything out unfortunately - if it is a diode, it will have three "legs" soldered to a mylar ribbon cable of sorts - there should be two diodes in there, an IR one, and the high powered red...

You found the laser diodes by yourself . (Laser 1 & 2). They "communicate" into the optical assembly trough a "dicroic prism", the square cube of glass you can see in front of them both. I can not for sure say which one is the 780 nm and 650 nm. But I think the larger one is the visible red one. I believe 1 is the red one and 2 is the IR from my own experience.
Use a 12V battery or power supply in series with a 220 ohm resistor. That will probably be enough to get the diodes to excite (lase) a bit, so you can se which diode is the red one. Without destroying it.
Just in case you didn't knew: A DVD recorder har two lasers; one for DVD media (650-660 nm) and one for the CD (780 nm). Both lasers read and write on their respective media. Toshiba has a new laser diode with both wavelenghts in one housing (and 4 legs).
