How powerful can the high quality lab lasers get?

I've seen ones on EBay around a watt or more, sometimes close to 2 watts....but I'm sure they probably come more powerful than that.

However, you get to those powers and you are out of range of most people's wallets!

Yep, basically as powerful as you want to pay for.

What defines a lab laser? What makes different from any other laser?

Lab lasers are non-portable systems which are designed to be mounted into another assembly (such as an optical table). They take power from the wall through a power supply which almost always has variable power controls so you can get 0%-100% power. They generally run with a 100% duty cycle or at least 4-12 hours run time. Most importantly lab-lasers have ratings for their stability, so you can buy lasers that say in 10%, 5%, 3%, or 1% of their rated power. Thus they are very stable and will run consistency for a long time rather than peaking for a few seconds and continually losing power like most handhelds.

Although I've never seen it myself, my professor has a 5W 532nm laser, pumped by a 40W IR diode. It is ALWAYS on probably due to a long start up time for various things. Since it's always on, it's controlled by a shutter. There are apparently a wide variety of systems to control the output of a lab laser, but shutter seems to the most often used.

My university is moderate sized, but all of our funding seems to be thrown at athletics rather than academics, so I'm sure this is no where close to bigger uni's laser lab, which is probably not close to at national labs.

If you're curious, you can always look up specs on the Wicked laser, or it's future successor.

If the laser is for production work, then I'd think it would be considered to be an industrial laser rather than a lab laser - though I suppose you could set up a powerful lab laser to do some production work.

pretty much power is limited by size of your wallet / size of your country /size of your economy , and your defination of a "lab laser"

Bear in mind USA "star wars project " was lasers ...IE
Lasers that are powerful enough to blast a missle ( solid metal) from a distance of miles

Rumours have it they gave the project up due to costs ....rumours from the states normally are shadows and conspiracy ..so they likey exist

star wars wasn't practical.. I'm sure it could work, but it would be a one or few shot deal. where exactly are they going to get the energy to fire the laser from? even chemical laser need replentishment. after the first shot the clock starts ticking and quickly the entire solution will go bad.

lasers are weapons ( or any energy weapon ) isn't going anywhere until a new form of mass energy storage is available. you need 10 times the energy density of a lithium battery for it to be possible. That tech will also kick off into other sectors, like cars and everything else.

Well batteries really don't seem like they will progress much beyond Li-Ion. I would bet my money on the new super-capacitors. Which if you think about it isn't a bad idea. They are something like 50X denser than normal batteries (Which is either 50X Li-Ion or like 13.33X denser than it if they were referring to NiCad). If you charge the super-capacitor either by solar or a small nuclear reactor and you could easily have a laser that can fire many shots without replenishment/repair other than time to collect energy.

Lots of universities have terawatt class lasers and some are building petawatt class lasers.

Labs use lasers for lots of different things, sometimes power isnt necessary. Lots of times they need lasers to be very precise in frequency, have a very narrow linewidth for talking to specific atomic transitions, these may be only 1 mw.
