Just thought I'd post a link to a recent article about what is considered to be the future of laser weaponry.

http://www.laserfocusworld.com/display_article/292398/12/ARTCL/none/Fe at/Photonic-Frontiers:-laser-weapons---Pumping-up-the-power

Article is long but has an interesting pic of the inside of the LLNL giant YAG laser showing the pump diodes lit up. Funny thing these are close cousins of what many of us carry around in our pockets - but theirs puts out KW and has a duty cycle of only a second or two - not to mention you can't see the beam and you can't use batteries!

Too bad... looks like they are using the new ones for RAM (rockets, artillery, morters) too though. We need videos!

Someone help me with this please:
Are the Nd:YAGs synthetic, how do they work, and what about the Nd:YVO4?

Here's more info than you can ever want (or need, probably) on lasers of all kinds, specifically solid state lasers:
http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/laserssl.htm#ssltoc

Just scroll down and there's lots on YAG and YVO lasers.

P.S. I'd love to see some videos of these things in action too....there's only one I know of that was in an issue of Popular science maybe less than a year ago. I don't have the link handy right now, though.

I've heard there are some lasers used to detonate the payload of a missile instead of using an electrical device to trigger a primary charge.
