What kind of pump diode or whatever do they use?

My guess is 1064

(1064/3=354.55)

Usually a high power Q-switched ND:Yag laser.

Exactly, these are frequency-tripled Nd:YAG lasers.

the most common UV laser is excimer lasers. it's what they do lasik with, mostly because UV is absorbed entirely in the cornea ( and most other flesh ). A standard excimer laser is 12 watts of output.

1064 yag lasers especially qswitch pulse lasers are the most dangerous lasers. the laser is completly invisible and in a pluse laser the beam is so strong it will be the equivaltent of a million watts of power for the brief pulse. it's stong enough that you can punch holes in your eye ( literally ) and not even realize it until you have significant damage done.

Almost anyone who works with 1064 yag are required/should have eye exams yearly to check for hidden damage.

Yeah, my SSY-1 can burn through a 1/4" Black ABS pipe with one pulse.

No, sunglasses probably just let less light in. Because it would be dark, your (the black thing in your eye) would expand, letting more light in. When you would shine a laser in your eye, more light would come in and hit your retina. Poof! You're blind with sunglasses and 20mW< UV laser (or any laser)... Idea

uv light will never heat your retina unless you've already burned your entire eye away. it's absorbed by the cornea and the lesne of the eye. accidental exposure to UV lasers causes sunburns, both of the cornea ( not nice since your eye will peel, it's about the most painful thing you can experience ) and of exposed skin. repeated low doses cause catarcts rapidly since the lense of the eye slowly cooks and clouds as the damage is done.

Most laser glasses protect from 190-532 and provide adequte UV protection. sunglasses usually only block a certain range of UV and would not be a good idea.

yep I got one at work that will punch through a 2x4 and a 1/4 inch of aluminum ( go on, ask me how I know that )

I also have a 5 watt 532nm yag that I can control the harmonics on, and the 1064 CW output is > 12 watts. It also has a UV output of 2 watts.

Fine. How do you know that?

P.S. Can we have pics?

Yes, I can't believe a SSY-1 can burn through a 1/4" sheet of aluminum.

They had a couple 300 watt YAGs where I used to work and (actually I think one of them was 400 watts) and my boss swore up and down that there was some guy who used to work there who had this impossible-sounding accident while working on one of the YAGs.

I was told that the guy got his hand in the path of a focused beam and it burned a hole clear thru the palm of his hand! And I was thinking at the time, "yeah, boss, and I've got this bridge for sale...." but maybe not! Shocked Maybe the boss wasn't bs-ing...... Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

I dunno if you ever watch mythbusters, but you could do something like balsitics gell to see if it burned through that. I wouldn't be supprized if it did though. If you think about the power from a 400 watt laser... wow.

I've been bugging those Mythbusters for a while now to do a laser special - to see what it would take to accomplish this sort of mayhem (what wattage and what kind of laser, pulsed or cw).

They need to do movie myths - like Goldfinger - see what it would take to cut a person in two with a laser! Twisted Evil
