Does shinning my green 55mW laser directly through my goggles really damage them? Shouldn't they be able to withstand this? _________________

i would guess probably not, as it it just 55mw, though if you had something much more powerful then there is a chance they would burn, I really don't see the point of this post as you should never shine any laser near or in your eyes anyways goggles or not. _________________ A wise man once said, "It is better to keep one''s mouth shut and be thought a fool, than to open it up and prove it." |

oh i see, but why would you need to see if they would burn? even though you're taking pics usually you wouldn't have the laser pointed directly at the goggles, and pics w/ goggles would have a tint _________________ A wise man once said, "It is better to keep one''s mouth shut and be thought a fool, than to open it up and prove it." |

I read somewhere that the goggles are safe for 10 seconds but I don't know how much power that was for. After that time they start melting.
Because they block out most of the light, it's transferred to heat of course which will eventually melt the plastic.
Otherwise, I'm thinking the goggles might discolour at the point and become less effective at filtering the light. _________________ (From bottom/left): WL CNI Nexus 95mW; WL Exec. 35mW (freak 100mW output!!); WL chrome Classic 35mW; WL Core 5mW; WL Pulsar 125mW; AtlasNova 5mW 635nm.

Yeah, I have heard the 10 second thing to, but no one has ever givin the power for that timing. I would say if you can't get a good answer here think about getting a second pair so you can use one for pictures and one for yourself, that way if damage is caused your still safe. _________________ Green: 5mW Core + 35mW Executive + ''''130mW'''' (86.28mW tested) EnVee

| Dunno about the 10 second dealy. I know with a 70mW I burned through a decent amount of the WL 2-3 OD sports in well under 10 seconds, but that's at close range. After it diverges for a few feet it doesn't really affect the goggles. |

The standard goggles are not designed to protect against direct exposure. A direct through-goggles exposure will not have the immediate effect as a direct beam to eye one, but the damage will happen.
