I understand that human vision is most sensitive around 555nm and then the sensitivity tapers off in both directions from there, and have read that the visible spectrum is typically from about 400 to 700 nm.
With my near IR laser (808nm) I can see a very faint red glow. Sort of like as if a 670nm laser had dead batteries and was just struggling to work.
Would that be actual 808nm light that I'm seeing, albeit very faintly? My first assumption was that it was some 'red' light being generated as a side-effect of the laser. But now that I've thought that through, it doesn't make any sense; lasers are supposed to be monochromatic, so if it's running at around 808nm there wouldn't (or shouldn't) be any light at 670nm or any other frequency, right?
Thanks!

No light is absolutely monochromatic. If it were to be monochromatic, the light emission time of an electric particle would have to be infinite and that is impossible. I think the equation is w*t=1, where w is spectral width and t is the emission time. |

| remember, these are just the light portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, but i guess that is all that matters here.... |

if anybody still looks at these the spectrum put up by jedi linux goes 500 to 800 back to 700 then to 900????? |
No its normal The resolution of the picture is to low so it makes a 6 look like an 8. It all depends on the font and font size. |

but you know what i find the strangest....
green, wich is like the best we can see, can only get through more transparent things, like the further you get down the spectrum from green they get through things, like infra red can get through the width of a hair or something, and radiowaves go through walls!
anyone know why this is? |

It depends on the material the lectromagnetic wave passes through.
There is a specific frequesncy that the material absorbs the most and the further the frequency of the electromagnetic wave is from it the less it is absorbed and the closer to 1 the material's refractive index for that frquency gets. |

yeah but like for something black like a big black wall, deep in the ir spectrum would pass through the wall more, then further along theyd just whizz thru it, like radio waves and tv waves.
oh yeah do the crystal sets use flouresence because i want a deep ir head radiation laser, like the legendery heat ray guns out of war of the world, exept not a big metal box...
ps. maybe resistent wire, IR filter to filter out the light and parabolic mirror, that would work... ish... |

That is because the wall is more "black" and opaque for the visible part of the spectrum and less for the lower frequency waves. |

The whole spectrum thing is actualy a matter of perspective... human perspective that is. _________________ I am the Universe. Resistance is Futile. The Truth is classified. |

also, Argon/Krypton lasers create white light, the argon provides the blue and green while the krypton makes red
