the human eye is more sensitive to the colour green, so a green laser of the same strength will always look brighter, and be visible further away.
next in terms of usability, well, if you plan on burning something, or cutting something, you would want to go with the green because the beam in a green laser is narrower, meaning the power is focused over a smaller area, giving it the maximum effectiveness.
the red laser offered here on this site is quite powerful though, putting it at the level of some of the lower mW green lasers here.
green lasers will always be better than red ones, but at a corresponding price. _________________

well, for skin the laser isn't very dangerous. some of the stronger lasers can damage skin if they are exposed for long enough.
as for from afar, the laser beam diverges, meaning that the further away it gets, the wider the beam. just like in the difference between the red and the green, the wider the beam, the less energy concentrated on a single spot, meaning that it is less likely to cause any damage, this is why while some lasers can burn a match at one foot away, the same laser can't at 2 feet.
the most dangerous thing about hitting something from afar is that the laser can still damage an eye, so you will want to be careful about that.
the photos you see of writing things on walls are taken from long exposure cameras which take a picture spanning several seconds. this can be done with any laser, as long as the exposure.
as for pointing into the sky. the beam of a red laser is barely ever visible, unless the power is strong enough (such as the 100 mW pulsar) with green ones though the beam is quite visible, and visible in more circumstances based on how powerful _________________

light doesn't actually stay in the air. when you shine the laser, you see the beam, and anything the beam is hitting. as you move the laser, the beam moves too. you can't actually keep empty space lit. the human eye however can be decieved, and if you wave the laser around on a wall or ceiling, it will appear as if you are making a trail of light. _________________

Welcome to the forums
The pictures you might have seen in the galleries were taken with long exposure times. So what happens is that werever the laser shined this got imprinted in the image. In order to see this in real life, you would need to have the lasers beam move really fast so that your eyes see a solid pattern. For imagery both the green and red lasers can do a similar job.
As far as the dangerousness of the laser goes, both the 100mW red and the 35mW and higher greens are extremely dangerous to the eyes. You need to make sure that the beam doesn't directly enter yours or anyone else's eye, otherwise they risk loosing their sight. As far as feeling the heat from the laser goes, with the green units, you can probably feel the heat from even a few feet way. Pointing a laser at another person is something that should not be done however, if for any reason the laser reflects or hits them in the face it could be disasterous to their eyes! To sum it up..both lasers are equally as dangerous to your eyes, but the red you will feel less heat from on your skin.
If you plan on getting a higher powered laser, just treat it with care. You might also want to invest in some safety goggles, they are needed when doing up close experiments, such as those listed around the forums. _________________ Cheers,
Sean.

Actually the power of the red laser is just as powerful as the higher end green lasers here. It just isnt as visible. With my focused pulser i can light a match almost instantly. Some people here cant even light matches with their nexus and fusions _________________ Phoenix - 75mW

if a laser 35mW or higher, gets in your eye like half a second would you be blind? or how long will it take? _________________ Pulsar*- sold to: Laserhigh for $250
