Here's the pump diode from my 50mW greenie. The blueish ligh is actually faint red for the eye. Note the geometry of the IR spot on the table. It seems the 808 nm diode is a sort of array or something. When focused it really BURN a lot of things the greenie wouldn't...
Now a fun thing for party uses. When directing the focused infrared beam into the Vanadate/KTP crystal, the good old green colour emits from the other side. It looks quite impressive. I will be back with photos later of this combination. |

| The diode is shaped like a rectangle hence the shape of the spot |

Nice photos. KTP looks damn small
I am impatient to see the photos of green light emitting from the cyrstal |

very nice, thanks!
I think this is first time we see this step by step process in action!
Eagerly awaiting next stage
btw, which greenie did you dismantle? _________________ - Hand held laser 350mW+ - May 2007 - GREAT LASER

That's a Spymode I believe, and as Steve0000 said, the diode actually produces that shape - no diode array in there though. My camera also picks up 808nm IR as a purple/white glow like in your pic, but in real life it normally seems a much more dull, deep, cherry-red.
BTW, what camera were you using to get the macro shot in the 2nd pic? |

Diodes in most lasers are a 100x1um emitter size. The thickness is usually 100x the wavelength. _________________

Thank you all for your comments. This laser is a "nameless" 50 mW greenie bought in Norway. I don't know which factory made the laser, but it's from China I believe.
The picture posted above of the crystal set is showing the vanadate, not the KTP sorry. Here is a new pic of the KTP, with possible an IR filter on the thop. It seems like it's 3 crystals (1 filter) in total. A square on top (IR-filter?), a circular thing in the middle (KTP?) and the square vanadate towards the pump diode.
My camera is a Canon Ixus 55 (5MP).
Here's a short video of burning some plastic with the focused IR-laser from the pump diode:
