does anyone know the strength and wavelength of the lasers used in CD players and burners? because i have been making lasers out of these diodes and have no way to test what they are. the CD lasers i do not have a lens for so i have not tried burning, but "nightshot" mode on my camcorder does pick it up and it looks plenty bright...

if anyone is trying to learn a new skill, try building a laser without using your eyes, but by using a camcorder on a tripod 10 inches away from you, facing you, in total darkness, with the screen flipped around in "nightshot" mode. (i did it in darkness so the camcorder would better pick up the IR light and i could see it before i fried myself in the eyes.)

They are usually red and about 2mW to 10mW. I don't know the exact wavelength.

If it's a burner diode I'd expect anywhere in the 50-200mW range for CW, but that's just a guess.

the Burner had a very weak red (one that you couldn't even see the dot in full light) but the reader and the burner also had another diode that was IR. I was wondering about those.

thanks for the estimated strengths Smile

a cd burner is no way going to give you up to 200mw of power. 100mw is more likely depending on the speed, 8x 16x 18x the higher the speed the faster the disc moves and therefore the more power the laser needs ot have to burn the disc becuase the disc moves faster on a dvd burner the diode is much higher than a cd burner stephanie has one that peaks 240mw avg 200mw and on a cd player <5mw definately and its ir

Well players won't give you nearly the amount of power a burner will. A burner has to actually burn the cd so itis naturally a stronger laser. A DVD burner will be around 100mW if done carefully and correctly. A cd player at 18x like soccersteve said should give you about 75mW-100mW if you are lucky. Remember just like lasers these diodes also have distinct personality's and based upon these it will determine the strength of your laser. Very Happy

oh wow, i didn't think the cd player would be that strong, i was thinking around like 10 mW from what i've learned playing with it... did you mean cd-burner or cd-player?
