1) Battery compartment and lid issues:
The quality consistency of the parallel battery compartment varies and defective battery cartridges will cause problems such as: low current draw, and output unstability. Users who have problems with their battery casings will receive improved casings in the near future.

2) Coherent LaserCheck false readings:
The IR coating on the crystal assembly blocks only 1064nm IR. About 50mW of 808nm IR is released along with the 532nm output. The divergance angle of 808nm is about 30 degrees. To measure accurately the 532nm on a Coherent Lasercheck hold the meter approx one feet away from the laser. The 808nm radiation at these levels are not dangerous to the eyes due to the very low power density caused by the wide divergance angle. (The focused 532nm light is much more dangerous.) Unlike 1064nm radiation, 808nm is not focused and therefore will not increase "burning capabilities". Future models will include an additional filter for 808nm IR.

Best Regards

Is that the problem?

I've been thinking I was getting rather "irregular" output -- often it's quite
bright when I first turn it on, but then rapidly fades. I've only tried two sets
of batteries so far, but changing them didn't seem to make a difference, and
they both measure the same open-circuit voltage.

There is the initial Spike which will appear bright, after a few seconds however it will settle at the rated output which is lower then the initial spike. You might be seeing this.

yeah this is wot i mean they test the gear that's coming out, say it's fine then when it gets to you, not working, they blame shipping, then all of a sudden they were blameing the battery contact, which has all of a sudden broken since they tested the parts! do you see wot i mean

Yes, but you may not know that the laser and the battery compartment are shipped separately,
from different sources. So the battery compartment you get is not the one that the laser was
tested with.

This is of course an issue in itself, which I hope Wicked will eventually deal with.
It shouldn't be that hard to get the battery compartments to Shanghai so they can
be tested and shipped as a unit...

I think they test the laser and then ship it out, then they just pick a new battery compartment from a box of them and ship that with the laser. The compartments may be mass produced, I may be wrong but I don't think they send you the battery compartment they test the lasers with as they would just use the same one to test each laser.

Question...

i'm wondering do the other lasers have this 808 nm 30 deg divergence beam?

I have a 55mw, and am concerned with radiation that i cannot see.. thanks for your help.

No this was an issue only concerning the Spyders. However this is fixed now so there's minimal IR leak in the Spyders also.
