If I buy an infrared laser, and use the "image enchancement" method of nightvision, will I be able to see the beam? What wavelengths can nightvision see?

I think they use near-IR, such as 808 nm
maybe you ill be able to see the dot as a bright white dot but I think you will not see the laser beam

Ok, but if I buy an 808nm laser it might work? or if I use a high-infrared laser, lets say...1064nm, would a thermal night vision be able to see it?

The usual night vision is either amplifying the residual light or near infrared, 1064nm may be just barely visible, 808nm should be fine.

Thermal nightvision is great but VERY expensive stuff, and works in the deep infrared. Your CO2 laser will probably be nicely visible, and that's at 10,6um. That is 10600nm. so the 1064nm is a bit far away, altough you might have a slight chance it also picks up shorter wavelengths (thermal vision for higher temperatures, around 250C and above).

OK- thanks for the info- I was thinking of getting an infrared, because they are so powerfull (and a bit unstable...) but I new I couldn't see the beam, and would most likely blind myself... So thats where nightvision comes in. But the combined cost, of the goggles and the laser is just about equall to the cost of a green laser of the same proportions.

In COD4, when it is pitch black, and you put on your night vision, you can see your laser sight Shocked ... But it is only a video game Rolling Eyes Shocked

Thermal or night vision?? Thermal is sooooo freakin' awesome and soooooooooooooo freaken' high dollars.

I have night vision with an IR light. it's not 1064nm. Because I can see it real dark red on the diode. (LED) Not where it's shining though. It might be 808nm.

you could make your own pesudo nightvision goggles out of a cheap CCD camera and LCD screen. Most web cams and cheap security cams pick up IR light and have AV out RCA plugs.

My litttle Microsoft web cam picks up IR from even a remote control, the dot looks white witha hint of blue to it.

The U.S. Army uses 820-850nm IR on the AN/PEQ-2 weapon mounted IR illuminator. It has two modes; adjustable flood/spot lamp for night time illumination and a 50mW IR laser for target acquisition. You cannot see the lamp or laser unless you are using nightvision.

Many night-vision systems, including those used by "the army" , use photomultiplier tubes to amplify the remaining light.
