So i recently bought a green laser... it has a pollished finnish with a little power indicator on it.

anyways

I broke the pot trying to modify it so i have soldered a copper wire from just in front of the button to one of the pins going in to the laser head.

sorry i dont know all the names but its workin very muck brighter now

but whats happening sometimes is theres a little bit of the beam spilling out like a half moon shape/sometimes not though. and laser beam looses just a wee power.

Any idea/ instructions on how to to fix this dudes?

I will be saving for a wicked 1... how powerfull should i go... i want max of course!

Hey Stu,
Welcome to forums!
I am no laser repairman, but I do know a bit about electronics. The pot you broke is basically the "Volume Control" for the amount of power going to the diode, by soldering in a bypass such as you describe, your laser will be very unstable, act pecular and will live a very, very short life. Sorry for the bad news Crying or Very sad CD

The phenomenon you describe happens when the ND:YVO4 crystal is either not recieving enough energy to lase properly or more energy then it is happy with, this causes the beam to behave eratically. The diode itself however may now be over driven...it depends on what the current rating is for it. Since you obviously wanted a more powerful laser by attempting the pot mod, you would probably find the 55mW lasers and higher to your liking. For the price the best values are either the Phoneix(75mW) or the Nexus(95mW). Both are excellnt lasers and provide lots of power for experiments.

Thanks for the replys.

The laser seems to be doing ok.

Ive had the resistor bypassed for three days now and although the beam sometimes leaks, its very faint.

I plan to purchase a WL in the near future once ive saved a few pennys.

Do u know if the company has a repair service beyond the guarantee?

He's talking about the Fusion laser, the 125mW unit.

EDIT: Looks like we both posted at nearly the same time, yours got though first Wink

After a little more time to experement with my leadlite, which has had its resistor bypassed. i have discovered that the light leaking from it is only happening when the laser is cold.

Scotland has snow at the moment!

All i do to stop the spill is give the laser small 1 sec bursts for about 30 sec... then its fine and gives a nice clean, bright beam with a flawless dot.

Do guys know of an estimate to how many Mw it could be putting out. Also what is and where i could find an instrument to measure this?

To measure the output, you will need some kind of coherent laser power meter to give you a reading in mW.

Don't feel too bad, although it died...you did get to fiddle with it and experiment. These things happen, especially if you have never done this kind of thing before.
